The problem is gang members, drug dealers and dog fighters have been known to train these animals because it often has been claimed that the pit-bull and other “fighting” breeds are especially dangerous because of human breeding selection for physical and “temperamental” traits functional in pit fighting (Budiansky, 2001). . The media spotlights these incidents altering the perception of people whose only exposure to these animals is seeing them in connection with criminals. To these people outlawing so called “dangerous breeds” may sound like a logical solution. However, responsible dog owners are having their homes invaded and being forced to watch a beloved family member being taken away to be “destroyed”. Not because the dog had bitten someone or it was being used in illegal activity, but because it has been labeled dangerous for no other reason than being a pit-bull. Cities, counties and states all across the nation are enacting these pit-bull bans in reaction to highly publicized criminal activity involving these animals. Can you imagine enacting a ban on Pomeranians because a criminal was the owner of one?…

Banned in Sweden, neutered, muzzled, and microchip-identified in Great Britain, and prohibited from entering some areas of North America, the pit bull terrier is as much a victim of the press as it is of its historic breeding to fight other dogs. Some unscrupulous owners, taking advantage of its natural tenaciousness and strength, continue to use abusive training techniques to produce fighting pit bulls, willing to take on any animal, and even humans. Therefore, pit bulls are said to be popular with irresponsible owners, who see these dogs as a symbol of machismo. This type of owner may be less likely to socialize, train, or desex their pet. Obviously, irresponsible ownership can have a great impact on how a breed is represented in attack statistics. However, what hasn¡¯t been…

I received a call from my son’s uncle, Harold asking if I would give him a ride to a friend’s house to examine some pit bull puppies she had for sale. At first I had planned other activities for the day, but my daughter who overheard the conversation begged me to go. I made the plans to pick him up and as we were getting ready to leave, I reminded my daughter that we were not going for us. I had owned dogs in years past, and after the last one was stolen out of my yard, decided it was too painful to own a dog. Also, I had heard all the horror stories of people having pit bulls around their kids. When we arrived at my friend, Courtney’s house, I heard the deep barking from inside. My friend motioned for us to wait at the front door as she put…

If a person suspects that animal cruelty or neglect may be happening, they must first wait and observe the animal and person in question. For example, if a person were to notice a dog chained outside with no food, water, or shelter, they might assume that the animal is being neglected. In order to prove this however, one must watch and make sure that the dog really is being neglected, and it’s not just outside for a little while in order to use the restroom. If the animal is indeed being neglected, meaning no food, water, or shelter has been offered to the animal within a twenty-four hour period, and then it becomes appropriate to inform the authorities. It is never a good idea to apprehend the person in question or to confiscate the neglected animal by yourself, as the resulting confrontation may become dangerous. Instead wait for the authorities to come and assess the situation and for them to determine if the animal needs to be removed from the…
