Pitbull Training Essay
Just like humans, dogs need to follow some rules around the house. As house and dog owner, YOU need to set these rules and ensure their enforcement through proper dog training. Dog training proceeds in a different manner, depending on factors like dog breed. Each dog breed has a unique temperament and must be handled uniquely. For Pitbull owners, here are a few Pitbull training tips that can help you raise a well-mannered dog.

Become The 'Alpha Dog'

One of the most basic parts of Pitbull training is establishing your role as the leader of the household. The best way to make a dog understand and accept your leadership is to teach him to "say please" every time he wants something. Here's how:

Set up a specific feeding schedule. A dog understands that whoever has control over the resources is the boss. Therefore, if you allow your dog to have his food bowl anytime he wants, then he will get the feeling that HE is in control. Rather, offer him food only at the appointed feeding time and give it to him only when he sits and waits for it calmly. If he jumps up to try and get the bowl from you, walk away and simply offer the bowl again at the next feeding schedule. Holding back a reward is a useful tool in Pitbull training, which helps make the dog understand that being rowdy at mealtime holds no rewards.

Positive reinforcement such as praises and treats is also a very powerful tool in Pitbull training. However, it is important that your dog EARNS these rewards. Otherwise, it will not hold much value. For example, do not praise and cuddle your dog as soon as you get home simply because you missed it while you were at work. Rather, praise the dog if he calmly gets up and greets you at the door, but ignore him if he jumps around and barks excessively at your arrival.

An Anonymous author stated, “Pitbull’s are beauty without vanity, strength without insolence, courage without ferocity, and all the virtues of man without the vices.” (Anonymous) As a Pitbull owner, I feel that Pitbull’s are often misunderstood animals. In reality any animal, pitbull or even a Chihuahua can be mean or gentle. Love and caring wins out with animals just like it does with humans. Affection is what creates a good or bad dog. Not their type of breed or genetic makeup.…

Despite this common opinion, an experiment was once performed. Fifty Pit Bulls were rescued from a fighting ring. Forty nine of the fifty dogs were rehabilitated. Some went to shelters such as Best Friends and many are well-loved family members today. The testing used to determine these dogs' ability to fit into society was exhaustive, extensive, and carefully carried out. Pit Bulls are different from other dogs and potential owners need to be made aware of the facts before considering rescuing or purchasing one. For example, a dog lover who has had Bichons all her life will be sorely surprised unless she does her homework and understand the bully breeds. Pits need a lot of structure, a very pronounced human alpha, training, exercise and lots of attention. The owner needs consistency, time, energy and quite possibly some…

They are quite loyal dogs. Pit bulls tend to make terrible guard dogs, they love people too much. However, this is not always a good thing. Pmarinc says “because pit bulls are so people-orientated they do not make good guard dogs. American motivational speaker Wayne Dyer once said, “Judgments prevent us from seeing the good that lies beyond appearances.” (Dyer, 2012). This quote holds true in relation to the public’s perception of “pit bull” type dogs. Pit bulls are often judged by their muscular bodies, large head, and strong jaws. Pit bulls are consistently portrayed in the media as aggressive as well. Because of this, pit bulls face a variety of different obstacles to overcome. From breed specific legislation (BSL), to dog fighting, to homelessness and euthanasia, the list of obstacles to overcome may seem impossible. However, “Experts say that five factors affect a dog 's tendency to bite: owner quality (quality of care, level of supervision provided); degree to which the dog has been habituated to people; training received (level and type); behavior of the victim; and genetic predisposition to be dangerously aggressive” (Pet Owner Liability, 2001).Only through education on the true nature of the breed and promotion of responsible ownership can pit bulls be helped.…

Have you ever seen a dog be obedient to its owner? I have and in fact I have experienced it as well. Dogs are very obedient to their owners. One way dogs show that they are obedient is that they obey you when you give them a command. When you tell a cat to sit or lay down, they really never do what you tell them to do; they just do whatever they want. For the most part, dogs can almost understand what we tell them to do. Sometimes they won’t understand and do whatever. Whereas cats just do what they please, and they also choose to ignore us. Dogs are a whole lot better to teach than to teach a cat. Why? Dogs mostly do what you say instead of cats where they ignore you and do whatever.…
