I am presenting this evening my Informative Speech. That was then….and this is now. I call Culpeper, Virginia home. Though, the small town I knew growing up was Springfield, Virginia. I would like to tell you and share some of my memories about growing up in Northern Virginia and of its changes that have occurred over the decades. Growing up Springfield really was small town USA. The normal commuter was traveling south onto interstate 95 from Washington, D.C. which is now is exit 169A and a permanent memory etched in my brain. Throughout the 1970’s there was only three very small strip shopping malls the served a country setting population. Then the 1980’s came, and flooded the suburbs with malls. People still went into Washington, D.C.…

Polio is known as the “crippling and potentially deadly infectious disease. It is caused by the poliovirus. The virus spreads from person to person and can invade an infected person’s brain and spinal cord, causing paralysis (can’t move parts of the body)”as said by the CDC. Jonas Salk encountered polio in everyday life and he started to create the vaccine. Now in the 21st century Polio is very rare and there is zero known cases in the US. Jonas Salk explored the many strings of the virus and used many dissimilar versions to create varying vaccines that could possibly work in destroying polio. Before the initiation of the Polio vaccine it was not infrequent for someone to have been diagnosed. Daniel Salk, Jonas’s eldest son, was diagnosed with…

From city to city, cultures, environments, and beliefs vary immensely. A city means more than simply “a large town.” For example, my own home of Dallastown, Pennsylvania differs drastically from the much larger city of Philadelphia. Where I grew up, the white population is the overwhelming majority; Philadelphia obviously differs in this category. Cities provide a haven of interesting people from conflicting ideologies, color, and financial statuses. My home’s landscape is regularly hilly and forested, whereas Philadelphia is full of skyscrapers, streets, and city-lights. Every town and city is unique in their own sense; landmarks, culture, music, and even transportation define what that place might stand for, or signify. I’ve visited numerous…

Living in Pittsburgh for the whole eighteen years of my life so far has been an amazing experience all around, especially since I only live fifteen minutes away from downtown. I have so many great memories from when I was growing up. My favorite memory is the when I watched the fireworks for the first time I can remember after the Pirates Game at PNC Park. I couldn’t imagine leaving my city (Pittsburgh) to live anywhere else. I have only been out of Pittsburgh one time, and that was to go to Cincinnati, Ohio. To me, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati are overall very similar. Although they are very similar, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati have many differences as well.…

By speaking about the Perry 200 Commemoration, the author is trying to connect to the native people of Erie. He relates to them as he speaks, using pathos to build up an air of culture and love for the city. Cory Vaillancourt then tells us how most citizens from Erie actually feel. He says that most people that live here hate it. While speaking on the topic of hate, he mentions the good that could come out of well-directed hate, such as the founding fathers overthrowing their British oppressors, African-Americans beating segregation and even how if you are born without money, you are not always stuck like that. You are able to work your way up and end up on top if you apply yourself. Cory is using history to try to instill a sense of pride in the audience. He follows with real, current statistics that could be changed if everyone was backing one plan on the problem rather than complaining about the overpriced condos near an Arby’s. These statistics and how they are presented are perfect examples of using pathos, logos, and ethos at the same time to get his point across.…

Recently the use of historic preservation has also begun to be viewed by cities and towns as a means to economic development and urban renewal. According to advocates, historic preservation has aided in local economic and community revitalization, increased tourism and employment, and preserved regional history, culture, and pride. However, historic preservation has often lacked public support due to a negative reputation. Some see it, not as a means to revitalizing local communities, but rather, as simply driving the problems further under the surface or into other areas, namely, as a means to gentrification. This reputation is not entirely unfounded, as there have been instances when gentrification was exactly the intended goal.…

The city of Chicago is an amazing place for many tourists to come to any time of the year. “Nearly forty million people visit Chicago annually. Along with forty million tourists, Chicago has nearly three million residents who inhabit the streets and sidewalks every morning” (cityofchicago.org, p. 1). Street performers, salespeople, and pedestrians add many distractions to the already unknown area. Also, the streets and mirroring shops on every block cause much confusion to a first time tourist of the city. “Chicago has more than 7,300 restaurants, 552 parks, and 26 miles of lakefront” (cityofchicago.org, p.1). The city of Chicago is an amazing place to visit until one gets lost in the much larger city than Greensburg.…
