Place Attachment And Place Identity
Place attachment and place identity are concepts that have been thought of independently as well as intertwined with each other. Various professional fields use place and identity theory; I combine the differing perspectives to form definitions for my study. Previous research causes me to view place attachment as foundational with place identity expanding on the concept of place attachment. The definition of place attachment that I prescribe to is the examination of the social and/or physical bonds individuals form between themselves and a meaningful place. I define place identity as the elements associated with a person’s identity that is imposed onto their built environment and sense of place through intentional and unintentional means.

An individual’s experience of belonging is invariably affected by their previous encounters with their environment and the people with whom they interact. This is clearly presented within the texts analysed. In the novel “The Simple Gift” by Steven Herrick the author successfully demonstrates the power of past experiences to both limit and enrich an individual’s sense of belonging to both their surroundings and influential people. Similarly in the poem “Drifters”, Bruce Dawe conveys the idea of constant change preventing people connecting and belong to a community or place.…

Depending on an individual’s relationship with a place, their perceptions of belonging can be influenced, if there is a positive connection between an individual and a place, they will belong, however if there was a negative connection in the past or in the present, they will not. The theme of isolation is greatly explored in the poem ‘St Pats college’ by Peter Skryznecki, as it shows that a negative connection to a place will result in a lack of belonging, whereas his other poem, ’10 Mary Street ‘explores the theme of the progression of time and how a good connection can be warm, welcoming and provide a sense of belonging. With the use of various techniques such as symbolism, imagery and repetition these poems highlight how perceptions of belonging and being unable to belong can by influenced by a connection to places. The short film ‘The lost thing’ by Shaun Tan is also testimony to this.…

Born in a seaside resort you could count yourself as quite lucky, I do. Bournemouth is a beautiful seaside town with so much to do and has been a huge tourist attraction since the very first short wooden jetty pier was completed in 1856. Bournemouth contrasts hugely to those scruffy little towns with nothing but dirty alleyways. Right on the Jurassic coast, Bournemouth beach is one of the most popular seaside tourist destinations. Every summer there is a massive air festival; this is when Bournemouth beach is packed providing the weather is nice. Whenever the weather is nice the beach is full up and there is a really happy, excited atmosphere, everyone is full up will positive emotion. It’s interesting how different places can cause different emotions and moods. There are countless activities to get involved with such as the BIC (Bournemouth International Centre), which has many different shows, concerts and skating events, the aquarium, which is especially interesting for children and the traditional Bournemouth Gardens, where there are live bands, mini-golf, hot air balloon rides and just a place to sit, relax and socialise. Bournemouth boasts the Triangle, the centre of the gay community, which is full of pubs, clubs and bars and there are conveniently located restaurants right on the promenade such as West Beach which is where I work. I really enjoy working right on the beach, looking out to the beautiful landscape every weekend with a calm sea. It makes me feel relaxed and happy, well that is of course if I don’t have a huge queue of people demanding the traditional Mr Whippy ice cream! When I am not working and just enjoying the beach, I love the gentle breeze, the smell of fresh sea water, the touch of soft sand, the sound of the waves crashing and rolling, the feeling of sand sink between my toes. The beach is such a lovely quiet place to be on a warm summer evening, the perfect place to sit, relax, think and enjoy the beautiful…
