Earlier this week we all read an article about a high school called Piper High. 28 out of 118 sophomores of the school had been caught plagiarizing and were given zeros on their project as well as possibly facing failing their class that semester. Unfortunately, their punishment was taken away by the board, but even so, colleges and businesses were asking for a list of people so they knew who not to hire.
That being said, just cutting and pasting
a few sentences and not citing each sentence has illuminated some of those students’ options for what to do in their future.
But they could have easily avoided all of that if they had simply cited their work. Citing your work gives credibility to your work. At the end of your direct quote or paraphrased sentence, put citation at the end, indicating the source you got it from and include a bibliography.
Just a small number at the end of a simple sentence that you decided to use that wasn’t your own, can easily save you from failing an entire class. And even if you don’t understand how to cite something, you’ve got teachers around that can assist you. All you’ve got to do is ask.
From everything I just said, I would think you would have picked up that I believe there is not a single reason you should plagiarize. It is a form of stealing – which is illegal and could get you into some serious trouble, not just at school, but with the law. If you do plagiarize, just be ready to face the consequences that come along with it.
