Since the beginning of time, humans have engaged in self-improvement. So there should be no surprise that plastic surgery is considered one of the oldest healing arts in the world. In 1969, there were many significant developments, such as silicone it was a newly created substance growing as a plastic surgery procedure. In the beginning it was used to fix skin imperfections. Over a few years, silicone implants were made and started being used in just about any part of the face and body. Interestingly, the controversy over silicone breast implant started overly growing the number of patient getting the procedure. Cosmetic surgery and plastic surgery are closely related but not at all the same. Each have different goals while each have to deal with improving the patient’s body. Cosmetic surgery focuses on the enhancing appearance, it can be performed on all areas of the neck, head, and body. The procedures include breast enhancements, lifts or reductions. Facial such as: nose jobs, chin, or cheek enhancements. Also, facelifts; eyelid lifts; neck lifts; and brows. Body procedures include tummy tucks, and liposuctions. Last but not lease skin which would be laser hair removals, Botox and fillers.
Plastic surgery is surgically dedicated to reconstruction of body and facial defects due to trauma, birth disorders, disease or burns. Therefore, it is intended to fix dysfunctional areas of the body reconstruct them back. Plastic surgery procedure would be: Breast reconstruction, Burn Repair surgery, Congenital repair (cleft palate), Hand surgery and Scar revision.
Most of the media over plastic surgery has focused in on the good parts of the reconstructive work the surgeons are doing and the improvement on the life of those who receive the work.
The number of plastic reconstruction procedures performed have increased by an average of 21% per year and continues to grow.
There are many effect in plastic surgery positive and negative alike. People want to feel good about the way they look so they take risk to change their lives. The boost in confidence after the procedure just because they are feeling better. However, it is extremely important the patient to understand the process of the procedure. Just to make sure their expectation is as realistic as possible. Making sure they find the right doctor and are receiving the right procedure.
Common complaints would be reports of being sick. For example, headaches, vomiting, nausea and pain. However, most of these problem go away over a period of time. Another issue would be inflammation over the area the procedure was done. In addition, patients going under surgery should be aware the results may not be what they are expecting. Some procedures can leave behind tissue damage and scars that will not go away. Which can cause a psychological effect on the patient, sending them into a deep depression. Suffering from anger and regret towards the doctor and themselves. Many individuals tend to suffer from an obsession with the way they look and began to be addicted to plastic surgery. A most common disorder is known as “body dysmorphic disorder” where people have distorted and weird observations of their body that they can never be
satisfied.

In recent years you rarely hear about teenagers or young adults receiving plastic surgery. In 2004 around a quarter of a million teens and young adults were getting cosmetic surgery. Their main procedures were nose jobs, tummy tucks, boob lifts, and liposuction. In addition, there are slim to no studies on whether or not there are long-term risk in the surgeries on such a young no fully developed body. In 2006, FDA approved silicone gel implants for women 22 and older.
