History of Platinum Platinum is a chemical element with the chemical symbol Pt and an atomic number of 78.Its name is derived from the Spanish term platina, which is literally translated into little silver. It is a dense, malleable, ductile, precious, gray-white transition metal. Platinum has six naturally occurring isotopes. It is one of the rarest elements in the Earth's crust and has an average abundance of approximately 5 μg/kg. It is the least reactive metal. It occurs in some nickel and copper ores along with some native deposits, mostly in South Africa, which accounts for 80% of the world production. As a member of the platinum group of elements, as well as of the group 10 of the periodic table of elements, platinum is generally non-reactive. It exhibits a remarkable resistance to corrosion, even at high temperatures, and as such is considered a noble metal. As a result, platinum is often found chemically uncombined as native platinum. Because it occurs naturally in the alluvial sands of various rivers, it was first used by pre-Columbian South American natives to produce artifacts. It was referenced in European writings as early as 16th century, but it was not until Antonio de Ulloa published a report on a new metal of Colombian origin in 1748 that it became investigated by scientists. Platinum is used in catalytic converters, laboratory equipment, electrical contacts and electrodes, platinum resistance thermometers, dentistry equipment and jewelry. Because only a few hundred tonnes are produced annually it is a scarce material and is highly valuable and is a major precious metal commodity. Being a heavy metal it leads to health issues upon exposure to its salts, but due to its corrosion resistance, it is not as toxic as some metals. Compounds containing platinum, most notably cisplatin, are applied in chemotherapy against certain types of cancer.

Some of the beliefs held by the villagers regarding the native peoples (a.k.a. savages) were that they were strange and hideous giants that lived in the dark forests of the interior and who painted themselves red (this was said by the fishermen and their wives). Others said that the rocks they made the paint from turned their skin red and could never be washed off. Still others say that there was cannibalism and murder among them, though this was only half believed by the villagers. There were also the few who believed that the native peoples did not dare to approach the villagers because they feared the guns and dogs.…

Scandium is a soft, silvery-white metal. With a cost of $270 per gram, it is too expensive for widespread use but alloys of scandium and aluminum are used in many different types of athletic equipment such as baseball bats, bicycle frames, and lacrosse sticks. Scandium is a fairly abundant element. However, it is not found concentrated, it is rather spread out and is therefore difficult to isolate. Scandium is classified as a rare earth element, which doesn’t mean that it is necessarily ‘rare’ but it is difficult to extract from the earth and separate from other…

    Radiant Red Rock

One of the most unique and special National Parks to me is Zion in Utah. The Colorado Plateau region lies along the side of Zion. This Park is very beautiful and has many different attributes to it but with out a doubt its red dirt and mountains are wonders. Zion is 229 square miles (147,551 acres) and has around 75 species of mammals, 271 birds, 32 reptiles and amphibians, 8 fish. The rock layers have been through so much; for example, they have been uplifted, tilted, and eroded, forming a feature called the Grand Staircase. This incredible landmark also carries the Virgin River right through it. My experiences at Zion have been only but amazing, I have learned so much and enjoy being surrounded by such a radiant red rock. I have found that this park has much history to still be found. What I have come across to be most interesting at this National Park is the Virgin River, Checkerboard Mesa and the Sedimentation taken place.…

The Riace Warriors were discovered by Stefano Mariottini on August 16, 1972, on the bottom of the Ionic Sea near Riace Marina in Calabria in Italy. The statues have been dated to roughly 450BC. The statues' eyes are inlaid with bone and glass, the lips and nipples are made from copper while the teeth are silver. Both statues at one point held spears and shields; however, those have not been recovered. Both statues stand firmly on the right foot, with the left foot forward and left knee relaxed. The right hip is thrust out with the right hand lowered at the side. The left forearm is raised to hold a shield and the head is angled to the right (Mattusch 1996).…

Nickel is one of the most important elements on the periodic table. It has plenty of history, as well as a huge importance to society. Its has unique chemical, physical, and geological properties. Nickel is used commercially in abundance, as it is used anywhere from simple art products such as ceramics to complex structures such as tubing for desalination plants. It is even used in the American five-cent coin, the "nickel".

Nickel was discovered by Axel Fredrik Cronstedt, in Sweden, during the year 1751. Mr. Cronstedt discovered nickel in a mineral called niccolite. He originally planned to extract copper from this new mineral but got none at all. This is why nickel, at first, was called "false copper". Instead, Cronstedt got a silvery-white metal, which was eventually used for other things. The origin of the name "nickel" is a derivative from the German word "kupfernickel", meaning "Devil's Copper" or "St. Nicholas's Copper".

The chemical properties of nickel are as follows: Nickel has the atomic number of twenty-eight. The atomic symbol of nickel, "Ni". It has the atomic weight (mass) of 58.70, to be exact, 58.693. It occurs in five stable isotopes. Physically, nickel is a lustrous silvery-white and takes on a hard polish. It is a hard metal, malleable, ductile, and slightly ferromagnetic. Its melting point is at 2651 degrees F, and its boiling point is at 5275 degrees F. Also, nickel is a fairly good conductor of heat and electricity. Nickel belongs in the iron-cobalt group of metals and is chiefly valuable for the metallic alloys it forms. Biologically, nickel is a trace element for many species, including the human species. A human body contains 0.0000454 grams of nickel for every one pound.

Nickel is not found in too many places around the world. It is found mainly, and obtained commercially from pentlandite and pyrrhotite, in the Dudbury region of Ontario, Canada. The Dudbury region of Ontario produces roughly thirty percent of all the…

My three main strengths are working well as part as a team being a good team player, being organised and having the ability to plan ahead and having excellent research skills. I want to start my career in Fashion buying, marketing and advertising, therefore these skills will help me significantly in that career. An example of were I have had to work as part as a team was during a live project for Seen Magazine, we had to design and make a extreme garment from magazine pages in two days. My role at the start was to try and come up with different ways of manipulating the paper into different shapes and forms that we could use as a starting point to make the dress. I decided that making various sizes of paper fans would work well in order to create a extreme dress. As a team we all starting making various fans, then we all worked together to esabele the dress. I provided good listen skills for anyone in the team and voiced my own opinions effectively. Each person in the team had a significant role, therefore are planning and organizational skills allowed us to finish the dress on time and win the competition.…

What is fire culture? What does that even mean? Well, I guess to know, you have to know something about what culture is and what cumulative it deposits of knowledge, experience, beliefs, values, hierarchies, religion and more. Now imagine having to live with people you do not know and having different work experience, beliefs, background, age etc. Well, that is what firefighters do. How does this work you may ask? It works because they have the same goals, the same values, and there is not really that many careers out there where you have a second family, where you know your brother or sister will not only have your back when it counts but one day may even save your life. Just like any good organization it has its challenges and these challenges have been changing the fire services since the 1950s.…

After listening to your feedback on the paper that I turned in, as nice as you were at choosing your words regarding what my paper reflected. I had to sit with myself and really think about where those ideas and thoughts had come from that I wrote down cause when I listened to what you were saying, all I could think about was “that doesn’t sound like me”! It had to be though because no one else wrote that paper for me. After a lot of thought I went back quite a few years to a time when I was an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous because my drinking and behavior got out of hand and I needed help. It got me through a period of time, but I have still managed to stay sober three years after leaving AA, and I was told that was an impossible thing for a person to do. They tried to convince me that the ONLY way that I had a chance at recovery was to stay with the program. The problem with that is there were a lot of things about the program that I didn’t care for. I cringe at organized religion the same as I now do AA for the simple fact that it has to be all or nothing! You have to believe everything they tell you and do everything they tell you exactly how they tell you to or you’ll relapse and get drunk. I had the same experience as a child when I was forced to go to Catholic Church. The only difference is I was going to hell. Hell here, hell after here. How depressing when you are just a person with some problems reaching out for help? That was supposed to help me. What I am trying to say is this: In those meetings and in the big book they drill it into your head like brainwashing that selfishness and self-centeredness is the root of your problems. That everything is all about you and you are nothing more than a selfish pig that doesn’t do anything for anyone else unless there is something in it for you. There are many other things that drove me out of there but this one is what I’ll stick with cause it stays on the subject of my paper. I didn’t realize how much of…

The word "vote" leads to many numerous reactions from people. Some become argumentative and begin to reveal their opinions on different political conflicts while others attempt to avoid the topic at all times. Many Americans do not follow politics closely and vote for parties that are aligned with the social groups to which they belong. People also vote based off their perceived judgments made about the incumbent parties’ previous actions or the situations that occurred during their period in office. Policy choice is another factor that influences vote choice as well.…

    Black Gold

The film Black Gold was a very interesting and eye opening film. The film focuses mainly on the coffee growers in southern and western Ethiopia. The movie shows closely the journey that Tadesse Maskela goes through to promote his union- Oromia Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union. The union was developed to cut out the middleman in the processes of trading and exporting the coffee beans. Tadesse Maskela also attempts to secure a living wage for the coffee farmers that her represents, and hope to have fair trade for social and economic justice. The union’s goals are to stabilize the local markets in and outside of Ethiopia, to improve the Ethiopian coffee market, and most importantly to improve the quantity of life of the coffee farmers. I find this very important because it really opened my eyes and realize that the farmers make very little or no money at all for every cup of coffee that we drink. The movie shows the drastic challenges that the farmers go through. Children are malnourished, uneducated, bad living conditions, and most importantly their work is not paying off. These farmers work eight to twelve hour shifts and make as little as fifty cents a day. The film Life and Debt showed similar issues like the ones in Black Gold. In Life and Debt we saw how due to regulations from the IMF and World Bank, farmers who produced bananas and milk lost profits due to trade regulations made and that other countries producing it at a lower price. This caused the bananas and milk to rot and the conditions and profits of the farmers worsen. The thing that I picked up form both films is that we need to be more aware of where and how we get what we have. We need to know who is affected through the process of getting this product. It always seems that the little farmers are getting hurt, while big corporations are just gaining the…
