Abraham Lincoln was the United States sixteenth President. Lincoln had deep feelings for peace and though that it was best reached through talking and calm manners than war and bickering, so when he was president before the Civil War and saw all the arguing that was going on he tried to solve it with a calm demeanor but that did not work and the States went to war against each other. After the election of Abraham Lincoln North Carolina seceded from the Union. Many states followed North Carolina and others waited until the Battle of Fort Sumter where on April 13, 1861 Major Robert Anderson surrendered his arms to General P.G.T. Beauregard. That was just the beginning of the Civil War.…

How does Willy Russell use dichotomies to tell the story in “Blood Brothers” and create drama…
Blood Brothers is a play written by Willy Russell about twin brothers whose mother was tricked into giving one twin to Mrs Lyons, a rich woman who can’t have children. Mrs Johnston keeps a child and raises him on a council estate with 7 siblings. The twins become best friends but their mothers push them apart. However they continue to be friends up until adulthood. This is a classic tale of nature versus nurture and it examines the debates surrounding fate, family and motherly love.…
How does Willy Russell use minor characters in Blood Brothers to reveal society’s attitude to class in the 1980’s…
Last week we went to the Phoenix Theatre in Leister Square to see Blood Brothers. When we walked into the theatre, I noticed that the proscenium arch stage was slanted which put everything on the stage in perspective. There was no live orchestra, and all the sound travelled easily throughout the room as it was quite a small theatre. Before the play, I had been told that the story was based in Liverpool and I had high expectations as it is one of the longest-running musicals in the West End. Behind the gauze, I could see the backdrop which was mostly grey and had houses and other buildings on it. It looked as if the scene was set in the heart of Liverpool. Due to the artwork on the programs, it was obvious that this production would be about the life of two brothers, and the different ways in which they grow up. The use of the clasping of hands symbolised a forbidden or unlikely friendship between the different classes that there were at this time.…
Mickey charges into the council offices where at the time Edward is delivering his speech. Mickey has the main role in the final scene; he has Edward at gunpoint, as is not at all sure what he is actually doing. Numerous factors contributed to the success of the production, this will include, stage set, lighting, characterisation, performance, general theatre, the mass recession on the 1970s.…
Throughout the play we follow the fortunes and misfortunes of the two boys who's lives eventually intertwine and they become the best of friends much to their mothers' disapproval.…
The St. Ambrose University’s rendition of Cabaret was definitely a play to be seen. Meant to be a informational and reflection all piece, Cabaret almost forces the audience to place themselves in the characters’ positions. Through the anger and violence, sexuality and promiscuity, and the Nazi’s search for Jews, this play is designed to shake the audience up and make them feel uncomfortable. Using metaphors and exaggerations, it tries to press the issues that are caused by people turning a blind eye to evil. With my prior knowledge of the Holocaust and Germany during this time, it is easy for me to say that I would not have conformed.…
Suzan Lori Parks' play "In the Blood" offers a compelling portrayal of the struggles faced by Hester, a marginalized woman navigating the harsh realities of motherhood and poverty. Drawing upon the feminist theory lens as introduced by Bell Hooks, this study critically examines the intersection of motherhood and poverty within the play. Bell Hooks' intersectional approach to feminism provides a rich theoretical framework for understanding the complexities of Hester's experiences, particularly as they relate to race, gender, and class. Through an analysis informed by Hooks' insights into systemic oppression and the interlocking nature of power structures, this study explores how Hester's identity as a mother is shaped by societal norms, economic…
I didn’t have any expectations of the play prior to watching it, as I believe art and especially performance art revolves around an experience, a new experience, that one must freely allow to affect them in whatever way it will, and therefore its essential to not ‘expect’ anything. However, I suppose there were things I instantly imagined would happen in the play, with the title being ‘Blood Brothers’; I imagined it would be very violent.…
In the play A Heart Divided it was fairly obvious that the playwrights wanted to make a statement with their work. They managed to cover both sides of the argument concerning the Confederate flag quite well. Symbols have a different meaning to everyone and it's all about the context in which they’re used.…
Recently, the Republican party has announced what future healthcare coverage will consist of. President Donald Trump has made many requests stating, “I am calling on this Congress to repeal and replace Obamacare with reforms that expand choice, increase access, lower costs, and price better health care. Obamacare is a collapsing….Action is not a choice — it is a necessity.” President Donald Trump’s requests seem promising. He stated that Americans with pre-existing conditions should be guaranteed access to health insurance. Individuals who buy their own coverage should receive additional tax credits and health savings accounts to pay for coverage. He also requests that states have the flexibility of their Medicaid programs and that the price…
Nevermore will there ever be someone like Edgar Allan Poe, a tortured soul, a deeply talented haunted writer, who found fame by creating romantic and gothic lore. He was a rare and unique individual, surrounded by controversy like no one else before. Poe was misunderstood during his time. Many attributed this to his drinking or use of drugs. The line between reality, dark fantasy and despair became intertwined in his work, and this is where it can be said that Edgar was a genius.…
