The ninth element is based on what the school and staff does, not what it’s called. A successful PLC should build a culture in which staff members reflect, collaborate, and are willing to change instructional strategies for student growth. The overall goal behind a PLC is to promote collaboration for the good of the student body and growth of core teaching principles. PLC’s are also designed to benefit the administration, the teachers and the students (Reynolds, 2008).

The two types of support are essential to a successful PLC are structural and relational support. The first support is structural support that encompasses proper times to meet, places to work and have adequate material resources. Relational support is the second component which includes the fostering of openness, honesty, respect, and caring among educators. Educators need to feel as though they have the appropriate resources to strive for PLC goals. PLC’s require cooperation and educators need to feel the freedom to be open and honest.
Collective learning is the third element and is very important. It involves a school wide approach and includes educators coming together for the overall benefit of PLC growth. Collective learning can be used to address ways to improve both the PLC and all areas in education. In order for PLC’s to be successful every administrator and teacher should be doing his/her part in the collective learning
