PLEASANTVILLE
1. I am going to describe David and his sister Jennifer. Before David “jumped” into PLEASANTVILLE, he is isolated. He only has one friend, when he wants to hang out with a girl, he pretends that he is talking to the girl, but the truth is he stands a hundred yards across the schoolyard from the girl. He reads all the books, and was addicted himself to the firm: Pleasantville which he can remember all the name of the person, all relationships between every characteristic, all the words they said, and even the music in that firm. I think the most important reason of this behavior is that he is too lonely; his whole word is about the books and movie. But his sister, Jennifer is totally different. She wears the latest clothes, is boy crazy, and follows the crowd. Before she gets into Pleasantville, I think she is a bad student.
After they struggle with each other, fighting for the remote control, they jump into the Pleasantville, and then David becomes Bud, and Jennifer becomes Mary Sue. David adapted to the life in Pleasantville quickly, I think the first thing that began to change is because of his late Johnson can’t do anything, and this shows how important he is. He even didn’t realize it, but when he was in his real life, no one will feel uncomfortable without him. Johnson begin to ask him how to do this how to do that, just like he is in charge. When he told Johnson he could make cheeseburgers without him, Johnson was skeptical, David encouraged him: you can do it! David became the leader when he gets into Pleasantville, and he began to worry about Jennifer, maybe because he thinks he is familiar with this whole world, but Jennifer isn’t. He is afraid of she will screw up this thing. The people in Pleasantville all the time do the same things, when David didn’t close the shop with Johnson, Johnson felt different, but he likes these changes, he don’t want to make hamburgers. He told David that he realizes the only thing he wants to do is to painting. Moreover,

Fantasy and reality are two major aspects in the film. Pleasantville is a perfect society where there is no crime, no fires and women stay at home cooking and cleaning. Everyone is polite and happy everything is perfect. When David and Jenifer are teleported to Pleasantville and are forced to play the part of Bud and Mary-sue the whole routine/script goes out of whack. We see David’s fantasy at the start were the director has used a close up shot of David talking to the girl of his dreams. As the camera zooms out, it becomes obvious that he was imagining talking to her the director uses this to portray David’s character. From this we see that he is a loner and is socially awkward. To David this perfect world is his reality. David knows everything about Pleasantville all the characters the script everything there is to know. It almost seems to be a religion to him. For Jenifer this is only a fantasy and she doesn’t like it she wants to bring her reality to this fantasy world.…

David’s parents and siblings play a very small part in the story by just having Kari and David be the responsible ones to get them to safety. Sarah is a student in Kari’s class that doesn’t get along with Kari at all and is someone that Kari just uses to hack into her accounts to send information to David and to find information on what is going on in the world. What would happen if you the only emotion you felt was pleasant? What if there was nothing else but pleasantness? This is what the movie Pleasantville tries to present to the viewer. Pleasantville is based off the very old story adam and eve. Adam and Eve, is basically the story of how humans became who they are today. Pleasantville takes certain ideals from adam and eve and brings them to the present, through a story about two teens sucked into an old tv show. Although gary yoss (director of pleasantville) reuses the idea of knowledge and paradise from the story of adam and eve, the transformation of whether knowledge is a good or bad thing and the idea that paradise is not what it seems ultimately leads to an idea of individuality that is justified.…

In the movie Pleasantville, a brother and sister from modern day became part of a black and white ‘50s television show called Pleasantville. This was done using a special remote given to the main character David, by a TV repairman. In the beginning David believed Pleasantville should remain the same. Pleasantville was his utopia; he thought everything was perfect. His sister Jenn was determined to change Pleasantville. Jenn thought people acted like losers, and wanted them to be “cool”. David later realized things should change because people did not show their emotions in Pleasantville, and had no way to express them. When people in Pleasantville showed their emotions, they changed from black and white to color. By the end of the movie, everything was in color because of David. People had learned to show their emotions. The creator of this movie was trying to communicate the message that emotions make things more interesting. This statement is true for Pleasantville and writing. In Pleasantville people would change to color when they showed their emotions. Bill expressed his emotions through painting colorful pictures. David gained his color when he got angry and punched Whitey. Emotions are put into writing to add detail. At Lover's Lane people reading books became colored and the listeners remained black and white. If people incorporate emotions into their writing it will help get the reader's attention and make the plot more interesting. This movie relates to our critical analysis essay. The idea of perception versus reality is conveyed throughout the movie. David thought Pleasantville was perfect when he watched it on television. When he became part of the show he found it had many flaws. The citizens of Pleasantville believed there was nothing outside of Pleasantville; in reality there was a lot. In reality, bad things can happen. When the tree caught on fire, the firefighters did not know how to deal with it because there had never been a fire in…

Pleantville is David's fantasy and he doesn't want it to change in any way, “maybe it needs to be messed with” said by Jennifer demonstrates her opposing views. This gives the audience the knowledge that things are going to change. These changes are caused when the relationship between Jennifer, “Mary Sue” and Skip, captain of the basketball team, begins to advance. The beginning of change is depicted by a red rose in the alternate black and white world. Colour is very symbolic in “Pleasantville”, it signifies not only physical change of pleasantville but also the inner journeys each character undergoes. The values of Pleasantville also change with the physical changes. Individuality is not tolerated and these changes increases the characters ability to have their own thoughts and beliefs. David and Jennifer have remained black and white, even though they have been the cause of all the changes in pleantville, this symbolises that they are also in need for change. The intolerance for individuality is demonstrated when Betty, mother of Bud and Mary Sue, feel the need to hide the fact that she has also become coloured to conform to the norms of society, “I cant go out there looking like this” the grey make up is juxtaposed with the colour. Betty's personal inner journey deals with her appreciating her individuality therefore her colour. Her values as a housewife are also…

    10. Although Debby and Sarah are sisters they are very different people. Sarah is kind, loyal and, responsible. While Debby, tells the truth to hurt people, is a pessimist and, is impolite. I believe that Debby and her grandmother both share the same morals. On page 115 and 117, Debby tells father that Rachel is seeing Lady Frankland. She does this because she wants Rachel to be in trouble with her father. This is an example of Debby’s negative character traits. An example of Sarah's positive character traits is when on page 111, Sarah is told to spy on Rachel. Instead telling grandmother that Rachel is seeing Lady Frankland she lies to grandmother to keep Rachel safe. I believe in this case it was alright for her to tell a lie despite what…

    4. It tells us that he’s been growing up in a really strict community/society. David as we know is a lefty and that’s considered the devil’s hand so that’s probably the one thing that he can’t tell everyone about like how Sophie isn’t allowed telling others about her sixth toe. The fact that even he’s a misfit makes it easier for him to connect with Sophie on some levels. Sophie’s childhood might have been very different from David’s because she seems to be living somewhere where she’s accepted for who she is whereas David’s “the one regrettable and unreliable factor in an otherwise orderly life.”…

There are two main characters in this story: Mr. Kerchek and Nicole Bonner, an intelligent rich attractive young girl that attends St Agnes High School. It begins with Mr Kerchek musing over a note that Nicole has appended to her essay that she turned in. In this note she describes her late night reading in bed, in which the author states that she read a novel a night, her disdain for Hunter S Thompson and her family’s habit of sharing a brandy before bedtime. Kerchek is taken aback by the intimacy of Nicole’s observations and by her personal, nearly impertinent, question about how he had bruised his ankle. Mr Kerchek knows that he is the only male teacher at this school and that many of the students and some of the single teachers find him attractive and find themselves wanting to date him. He is not attracted to his female colleagues so he does not date any of them but he does find Nicole as dangerously alluring. Mr. Kerchek knows that Nicole is a brilliant educated intelligent woman and that he writes a keenly detailed recommendation letter to Princeton strongly supporting Nicole application for admission. It is this that leads to the setting…

The characters in Pleasantville represent Adam and Eve of the Bible. In the movie, before David and Jennifer enter Pleasantville, the residents lived peacefully, but lifelessly. They did not question their motives or their existence. They just lived. This was how Adam and Eve lived before they ate the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. They did not question, and they just lived. But once David and Jennifer were introduced, the residents of Pleasantville started to see changes happening. Things were not going the way they were supposed to. Soon enough, free will was introduced. The residents had a choice in what they did. Slowly, the whole town began to realize this different way of living. It seemed natural to make the change to freedom. When Adam and Eve ate the fruit, they too realized a different way of living. They lived freely. It is humans’ nature to be curious and be free. The residents of Pleasantville were the first of their kind to understand what it was like to live freely, just like Adam and Eve.…
