time there was a lot of racism especially with African Americans. African American people weren't allowed to go to same places as the whites. that was when the doctrine "separate but equal" was taken place and blacks would have there own schools, bathrooms and even sit on the back of the bus. In the case Plessy v. Ferguson, Plessy was found guilty. The supreme court case decision limited the rights of african americans because they were segregated from the whites and weren't respected equally as the whites. Brown v. Board of Education was a supreme court case that made segregation illegal in schools. At this time (1954) African Americans and whites were still not looked as equal. African Americans had there own schools, own restaurants, own bathrooms, and so did the whites. An African American was not allowed to even go somewhere that was for the white people. In this supreme court case, brown won and African Americans were allowed to attend white schools. Schools that didn't allow desegregation were closed down by law. This supreme court case decision expanded the constitutional rights of African Americans because they could attend public schools with whites. These two court cases although different both affected the rights of African Americans in the United States although one limited it, the other in the future expanded it. It shows that thoughout American history Americans are able to realize and correct their mistakes. As a country Brown v. Board of Education strengthen us, it showed to other countries that although racism has been a well known factor in this country we have been able to abolish it or at least come very close to it. America is a country of equal rights and these two cases prove our stride in keeping it that way.
