The book has recognized 42 logically grouped management processes, which when appropriately applied and integrated lead to accomplishment of the successful project implementations. These 42 processes are part of the 5 process groups i.e.
1.Initiating
2. Planning
3. Executing 4.Monitoring and controlling
5. Closing
Managing a project is not limited to the process groups; there are also constraints that are to be taken into account. The most common constraints called the Triple Constraints talk about Time, Scope and Budget. These are broad terms that encompass but are not limited to the following – ~Quality ~Schedule ~Resources ~Risk
Further, apart from the 5 process groups PMBOK also talks about the 9 knowledge areas. Each of the knowledge areas comprise of the processes that need to be accomplished within its discipline in order to achieve an effective project management program. Each of the processes mentioned below also fall into one of the five broad process groups. It creates a matrix kind of structure wherein every process can be related to one knowledge area and one process group.
The nine knowledge areas, as per their names are pretty self-explanatory. They are stated as follows with their purpose--
1. Project Integration Management - Coordinating the other areas to work together throughout the project
2. Project Scope Management – Ensures that the project includes all the requirements and no new requirements closer to the project end dates
3. Project Time Management—This process ensures that the project is completed on schedule.
4. Project Cost Management – Takes of the budgetary
