The final paragraph of the poem leaves the reader with a satisfying sense of peace, where he basically says that although his mother spoke her mind and was firm on her beliefs, and though the things did may have sometimes been a nuisance, she was his mother. The things she did made her the person she was. Her characteristics were the things that made her real. Though eulogies are usually spoken with a soft tone, and speak of all the great things the person did, the reality is no one is perfect, and the flaws that people have make them who they are. The author’s purpose was to show his true love for his mother. He loved her because she was, in fact, so fierce and outspoken, which is why the thought of this poem is so important.…
‘The Waking’ is a contemporary jazz piece written by American vocalist, Kurt Elling, and features Theodore Roethke’s 1954 poem of the same title. Released in 2007 on the album Nightmoves, Elling uses musical techniques to enhance the message of Roethke’s poem. However, in order to understand the reasoning behind the devices Elling has used, the meaning of Roethke’s poem must first be discussed.…
The wounded heart now enormous tune of sorrow, Skunk breath a force to linger tomorrow. Saint unreal a body-less per poster, Bound by force that will never divide as greater. Benevolent a flaunt of no remorse, Unmistakable tone unruly of course. Patch up the hole in your britches; water new soil, Be thankful thieves ravishes in turmoil.…
A tattoo is like poetry, because there is always more to the story than what meets the eye! The sonnet “First Poem for You” by Kim Addonizio is a riveting piece of poetry that uses symbolization to help guide the readers to understand the emotions and feelings the woman has towards her partner. Visual and tactile imagery used within this poem helps readers interpret the meaning of the poem. The theme is longevity and the true meaning of a relationship. In Addonizio “First Poem for You,” Addonizio utilizes literary elements to develop the story and detail a fictional character that is in love with a man that has permanent tattoos. The poem that I reviewed this week is called, “The Death Spread” by Tyler Brewington and I found it on versedaily.org on 5/09/16. In summary, this poem is about death and the uncomfortable yet beautiful images it can invoke.…
Death causes the Bundren family to deal with change. Each character selects a unique way to cope with the family’s loss. By coping, the characters satisfy personal motives while simultaneously moving on with their lives. Coping mechanisms differ in the character’s emotional connection or “closeness” with death. Ranging from a strong emotional relationship to complete separation and dissociation, the “close” spectrum charts a character’s effectiveness in coping with death. As Faulkner addresses the idea of closeness he tests the constraints of emotional connection. Can the emotional connection become too “close,” enough to drive someone to the brink of insanity? As I lay Dying offers insight and response…
The grave is the story of a young girl named Miranda who goes exploring and hunting with her brother Paul, one afternoon. Upon trespassing onto private property that their family had sold, and inspecting some empty gravesites, both Paul and Miranda find hidden treasures inside the empty earth. Both had something the other sibling admired, Paul a thin, golden ring and Miranda a silver dove. After trading their discovered items, and returning to their hunt, the reader is able to see more clearly the change that takes place in Miranda. Initially seen as a boyish young girl, unconcerned with behaving in a feminine mannerism, we see her transform after putting the beautifully designed ring on her finger. The central idea of “The Grave” is that people live up to the expectations placed on them, by both others and themselves.…
The works we studied within Creative Writing were all helpful in creating my own works to submit to the class. Throughout all of the reading, many of the works inspired me in different ways, whether it was short story plot ideas or word usage in the poems. While crafting my work for the final portfolio, I reviewed many of the poems from our poetry packet in an effort to find inspiration and to create new interesting images. I took the most inspiration for my formal poem, which I found most difficult to write. One of the poems that was most useful to me was Jilly Dybka’s “Memphis, 1976.” Dybka’s poem follows the sestina form; I also wrote my last poem in this form, so it helped to follow the form by looking at her poem as an example. Dybka’s…
In the poem “To This Day” by Shane Koyczan he shows that people that get bullied constantly aren’t able to blow stuff off as easy as others. In the poem he shows that some people need motivation and help. He shows this by stating in the poem,”We are not abandoned cars stalled out… and if in some way we are don’t worry we only got out to walk and get gas”. Gas could symbolize getting help from someone they know and trust, or could be trying to get help with therapy or things of that nature. Another meaning could be that they need to get motivation to keep going from something. The dark background colors could mean that they need better things to happen to get motivation from.…
Have you ever felt like you were born to do something? Since I was born I felt like I was born to play baseball, but after that I would love to be a broadcaster. That is why I have chosen to analyze “The Broadcaster’s Poem” by Alden Nowlan. Analyzing a poem is not an easy thing to accomplish for me. As I very rarely analyze anything I read, but you should try everything once.…
The great amount of respect and admiration a child had for its mother's courage is abundantly evident throughout Edna St. Vincent Millay's The Courage That My Mother Had. Simultaneously, the poem conveys feelings of betrayal. Millay's poem, through strong associations with equally as strong words, such as rock and granite, infers the general theme of the poem and the amount of titular courage the poem's mother possessed. In lines 3-4, a rock is compared to her mother, who was born and raised in New England emerged or was "quarried" from other similarly strong willed and courageous people. This courage having been "passed" to the mother as it should have been passed to the poem's child. The granite hill could be inferred as being the lack of empowerment in women at the time-lifeless, and stagnant. The new granite is infusing this generation with life and empowerment. In line 11. Her mother’s courage is also compared to a rock, one that is so strong but was not left for her to keep. It is absolutely unacceptable to the child that its mother died and took the courage with her to the grave because that courage should have been like a rock and existed for all time. The mother has no more need of it for she has died. The narrator longs not only for the mother, but for its own self worth and existence. What initially begins as a sort of tribute to the child's mother and her courageous qualities soon evolves into a sad and self-centered drone of anger and resentment. Millay’s use of metaphors and clever word associations in Millay's poem get across to the reader the intricate emotional attachments of the child to its mother and the manner in which the child valued its…
Born January 19, 1809, Poe never really knew his parents. His father left the family early on, and his mother passed away when he was only three. Separated from his siblings, Poe went to live with John and Frances Allan, a tobacco merchant and his wife, in Richmond, Virginia. Poe published his first book, “Tamerlane and Other Poems” in 1827, and he had joined the army. Poe went to West Point, but before doing so he published his second book “Al Aaraaf, Tamberlane, and Minor Poems”. After being kicked out of West Point, Poe decided to write full time. Moving around in search of opportunity, Poe lived in New York City, Baltimore, Philadelphia and Richmond. From 1831 to 1835, he stayed in Baltimore with his aunt Maria Clemm and his youngest cousin, Virginia. Virginia became an inspiration to Poe and his love life. The couple married in 1836 when she was only 13 years old. Poe became a literary sensation in 1845 with the publication of the poem "The Raven." It is considered to be one of the greatest American literary works and one of the best of Poe's career. There is a lot that you can do by reading about Poe's life. His work tells about the events in his life, through his particular phobias and obsessions, and also to the disturbing, bizarre poems and tales that he wrote.…
There are many frequently occurring ideas in poetry. The basic message of a poem is called a "theme." All poems have a certain theme that they revolve around, such as love, nature, life, and confusion. In different poems by different poets, the same themes correlate with each other because they all revolve around the same subject matter. Although seen through different angles and viewpoints, the same message is present and intertwined within the poems. One of the most commonly used themes in poetry of various poets is the theme of death. There are many different aspects of death that can be written about, but still, all the poems connect in the fact that they are about death.…

Death is an inevitable phenomenon. It is something that no human being cannot escape. Some people are frightened of the concept of dying while the others already accepts it like it is their fate. Although, Donne, Tennyson, Thomas and Frost used the concept of death in their poems, they portrayed it as powerlessness of death, crossing from life to death, grief and contentment.…
