Humans learn by communicating with others. We can learn by reading, listening, seeing, and doing. Langston Hughes' poem “Theme for English B” is about communicating when there are similarities and differences. The poem is about a Hughes' instructor wanting the class to write a page about their thoughts and Hughes wrote a poem about similarities and differences between people in society and that they can learn from them. “Themes for English B” can be related to “The Cave”, “Metaphors We Live By”, and “On Communication.”

    In the poem, “Theme for English B”, Langston Hughes demonstrates how the speaker feels about this English B paper assignment. He puts you in his conscious and has you go through his thoughts to give you a sense of what he is feeling like in this classroom being the only colored student in a class full of white students. The speaker is told to write a paper about himself. When that paper gets assigned, he is stumped. He took in consideration that he is the only colored student in his entire class. Poetry can be interpreted many different ways and is even harder to interpret when the original author has come and gone. Poetry is an incredible form of literature because the way it has the ability to use the reader as part of its own power.
