Emphasis for the treatment for lepers either had good or bad outcomes depending on the situations. Just like the man in Manuel Philes’ poem who survived was restored by divine intervention, even though he reached the most advanced stage of the disease. Such cases show the historic presence of what is to be a miraculous healing during the Byzantine period. Although bad outcomes like involving Basil of Caesarea and Francis of Assisi with kissing lepers.…
It’s the little things that matter the most. By offering the most essential materials to someone shows the strength and perseverance of true love. A object given to someone doesn’t have to be expensive as long as the person gives it value. Humility is not a trait that any person can carry. There are people willing to sacrifice all they have without wanting anything in return.…
As the Catholic Church continues to frown upon homosexuals, they continue to frown upon transsexuals to an even greater extent. They see it as even larger perversion of the (already perverted) homosexual lifestyle. At the risk of generalizing, I would argue that many transsexuals then find that they need someone or something that will not judge them and only treat them with the respect they need. La Santa Muerte helps to fill the void left by society in many North American transsexuals. With most people not liking what they do not understand or ca not explain, this makes transsexuals the perfect target for them and the Church. People cannot explain why there are transsexuals, they do not know how hard it is to be transsexual, and they…
Lupe (Ama): A religious woman who follows the Mexican traditions and prays a lot to the Virgen de Guadalupe, she has a long hair, loves her family, she was with a lot of grudge with Juana because of Anita’s dead. Later she became an indigent woman, alcoholic and with mental problems.…
Both swallowed in their job, the janitor in “Jorge the Church Janitor Finally Quits” by Martin Espada and the secretary in “The Secretary Chant” by Marge Piercy feel unappreciated and lost as employees. Jorge is “outside…of [Americans] understanding” and The Secretary is lost in her work and compares herself to objects such as her “hips are a desk.” The employees from these poems have become hidden behind their duties and are slowly sinking into the unknown.…
This album is all about family which this my favorite, because family is one of most important things for us. It is so hard to pick the one that I like the most and the one I like least. But I do have some prefer poems, based on the plot of the poem. Jimmy Santiago Baca Green Chile that I prefer more, at the page 818 of The Norton Introduction to literature., and the poem that I prefer least is Philip Larkin This be the Verse at the page 817 of The Norton Introduction to literature.…
The works we studied within Creative Writing were all helpful in creating my own works to submit to the class. Throughout all of the reading, many of the works inspired me in different ways, whether it was short story plot ideas or word usage in the poems. While crafting my work for the final portfolio, I reviewed many of the poems from our poetry packet in an effort to find inspiration and to create new interesting images. I took the most inspiration for my formal poem, which I found most difficult to write. One of the poems that was most useful to me was Jilly Dybka’s “Memphis, 1976.” Dybka’s poem follows the sestina form; I also wrote my last poem in this form, so it helped to follow the form by looking at her poem as an example. Dybka’s…
Lorna Dee Cervantes' poem, “Poema para los Californios Muertos” (“Poem for the Dead Californios”), is a commentary on what happened to the original inhabitants of California when California was still Mexico, and an address to the speaker's dead ancestors. Utilizing a unique dynamic, consistently alternating between Spanish and English, Cervantes accurately represents the fear, hatred, and humility experienced by the “Californios” through rhythm, arrangement, tone, and most importantly, through use of language.…
Life leads us to excessive wishes that often result in a man’s downfall. Sir Philip Sidney in “Thou Blind Man’s Mark” portrays his hypocrisy towards desire and shows how it influenced to their downfall and destruction. In his sonnet, Sidney uses metaphor, alliteration and repetition to convey his feelings for desire.…
These poems address the painful urgency in young people to claim a self-identity on a high level. They highlight the cultural tensions that an individual may experience on a daily basis. They may be quick to chose a side and distance themselves from the other. Most of the time, people will be regarded as Mexican-American because that is the way society is. Society is quick to put labels and divisons on idividuals. Individuals become just Americans during times of national crisis. When unity is needed by the country, everyone is considered an Americsn…
The text that I will be analyzing is a poem by Lorna Crozier called The Child Who Walks Backwards. Throughout my analysis I will look into parental abuse, underlying meanings in the lines in the poetry, as well as connections I can make personally to the book. I think it is also important that I bring forth essential messages in the words and statements of the poem. The main theme I will choose to focus on is that abuse does not only happen at school or back alleys, but that it happens in homes as well.…
In the poem “An Echo Sonnet”, author Robert Pack writes of a conversation between a person’s voice and its echo. With the use of numerous literary techniques, Pack is able to enhance the meaning of the poem: that we must depend on ourselves for answers because other opinions are just echoes of our own ideas.…
Have you ever felt like you were born to do something? Since I was born I felt like I was born to play baseball, but after that I would love to be a broadcaster. That is why I have chosen to analyze “The Broadcaster’s Poem” by Alden Nowlan. Analyzing a poem is not an easy thing to accomplish for me. As I very rarely analyze anything I read, but you should try everything once.…
