Poem Analysis Of Young-Lee's Life
The first stanza of this poem illustrates life is a lonely cycle, and as a child Young-Lee learned to be hopeful for a better future. Lee Young-Lee is left alone as a child. This loneliness is reflected through the verb tense of words within the first stanza, for example the word ‘alone’ comes before ‘time’ which suggests that Young-Lee as a human being is alone, but in time he is also alone because even if he has his parents for some time in his life, he will eventually have to live life independently not through his parents. The stanza reflects Young-Lee’s childhood being introduced to loneliness and his response reflects the syntactic structure reconstructing his childhood. The syntactical usage of commas also illustrates the complexity

Stanford and University of California alumni Sandra Lim reads from The Wilderness on April 7, 2015, at Prairie Lights. As an alumna from the International Writing Program Lim was making her return back to Iowa City after 11 years. In The Wilderness Lim reads a collection of poems about love, spring and one poem that caught my attention was about the individual struggle of one's body within one’s mind. The poems are open to many interpretations but that is the way that I chose to interpret that poetry in particular. The interesting thing about Lim’s poem is how describes the body parts in some of her poems. It is very vague. It almost makes me feel a little bit uncomfortable but at the same time, I really like her style. The way she describes…

Li-Young Lee tells the story from a third person limited point of view as the author focuses on the father and tells us his thoughts and feelings throughout the poem. The story is told from the father’s perspective, and his affection for his son is clearly displayed as he wants to please his son…

The second line of the text refers to flowers being picked during the day. The action of taking flowers out of their roots has a figurative connotation, because their is a separation between the flower and it’s roots, but their is no need to take out the flowers, it's an action without a purpose. Flower picking can serve as allusion to the life of Li Young-Lee because as he waits and time passes, he is left with no parental roots to guide him, and each moment that passes is each moment the flower is being taken out of the ground. Furthermore the syntactical absence of commas allow the free verse structure of the poem to be illustrated because although the words are structured in the poem, there is no structure for how the poem can be interpreted. So the poem can be a reference to childhood, or a reference to a loss of time. In this case, the stanza refers to Lee touching and reflecting upon his father's past which are apart of the book, and although this is true he is also losing time by reflecting and by picking the flowers. Although this all takes place in the past the present implications are that time is lost in Lee’s childhood because he spends time reflecting on the…

Li-Young Lee reveals the father’s fear of the his son aging and in time demanding more from him than he can give. While the son is only five years old in the present sense of the poem, the father still dwells on the future. Distracted by the what will come vs. the present moment, inhibiting him from focusing on what he has now. The father’s inability to tell a new story warps his imagination into something grim and dismal. Coming up with a new story is simple action but in the father’s eyes it’s the “burden” of not being able to please his son. At the same time the father loves his son immensely and is scared of the day his son will leave because he is unsatisfied. Overall, the father's love for his love and his inability to tell a satisfying story warp together, and create a future that haunts the father. Perhaps, this is why the father can not meet his sons demands; the father is too caught up in a possibly non existent future that it stops him from actually trying anymore because he believes he has already perceived the…

Time has the tendency to impact everyone and everything. In the poem “A Story” Li-Young Lee reveals the intimate yet short lived relationship of the father and the son through the use of dialogue, conflict and point of view to hint at the inevitably of children branching out and possibly surpassing their parents. Emphasized through the differing perspectives of the father and son Lee highlights the innocence of young children and parents and their changing relationship over time.…

The true beauty of this poem for me, and what makes it so enigmatic, is the mutual recognition in a person, between two moments past and future, of one's frame of mind at the other moment. We are so long in time, that such connections are very, very rare, and to have a moment of empathy with one's future or past self is both to gain a momentary insight into the nature of life and aging, and to momentarily gain a new internal context to how we perceive the aging of others, and what it really means to…

Upon becoming adults, our perceptions of people and relationships differ and change. As a child, we are impressionable, innocent and under the care of our parents, we see people on a shallow level. The poem shows the reader this with its structure; the focus often jumps from the past to the present. The change in relationship with the poets mother is also apparent, she goes from being a mere observer, drawing in the environment around her and mimicking her mother, to being like her, both physically and mentally.…

Nothing about life is easy; you work, you try, and sometimes you fail regardless of your efforts. Some people believe in reincarnation, others in some form of an afterlife, and some believe you only have one life. Believing that you’re only able to live one life could benefit the person because they take that idea and they accept it. In that acceptance they choose to live everyday as if it were there last, so that by their last breath they can say they had a good life, even with the many struggles and heartache. Most people live with the belief that we only have one life; although life is a gift with endless possibilities, it's…

This represents the lost in the poem and what people are subconsciously thinking everyday. Lines 1 and 2 epitomize this meaning because it says, "Even when I forget you I go on looking for you." This leads on to how life is symbolized in the poem as well. People go their whole lives not realizing they are lost and need time to themselves to become the person they have the potential to be. Some follow behind others and are just a copy of the person next to them, in effect they are not their own person and the things they do are not of their true choice. This symbolism is conveyed in the last two lines as it says, "What they say you who are not lost when I do not find you." In conclusion you are not truly living life if you are not living as yourself and as the…

Lee also uses structure to show the complex relationship between the father and son. The poem shows a thought of the father’s. The father is picturing the day the son gives up on him. He sees him walking away and the father is encouraging him to stay to listen to another story. The structure of the poem shows the father’s need for the son to stay. With the father’s thoughts included in the poem it shows how he would beg his son to stay. Using this literary device helps Lee explain the father and son’s relationship.…

I therefore believe that the poem can be compared to a gradual experience of a choice made in ones life. Demonstrating how usually one decides to follow a certain path in their life, as it seems the more suitable choice at the point in time. Poems can have many interpretations when it comes to breaking the piece down to find its meaning. " Alone", by Edgar Allan Poe, directly and indirectly presents Poe's actual feelings towards his childhood. Poe introduces an adult speaker, which represents him, who is recalling his childhood. He uses a somber tone to describe his sorrow of feeling like he did not belong and he reasons about what loneliness and isolation did to him and compares it to a storm and a mountain. Edgar Allen Poe used his own life experiences in his literary works to get away from the stresses of his reality.…

Chinese history is long and complex—with records dating to around 1600 BC. Within this extensive period, many forms of art and philosophy were developed by the Chinese people. Poetry was an art form which was very important in Chinese history. One of the most famous Chinese poets was Li Bai. He lived nearly 2000 years ago, during the Tang dynasty. He grew up near Chengdu, in Sichuan Province, which is adjacent to Yunnan Province in the western part of China. Li Bai was influenced by Taoism which is one of the most influencing religions way back more than two millennia.(Robinet, 1997) It puts emphasis on the link between people and nature and much of Li Bai’s poetry portrayed nature and human interaction with it; this type of poetry was known as Jue Ju poetry. (Heifer International) The main themes of the above poems written by Li Bai are connected with Taoism, since inspiration is drawn from the Taoist belief that man has an intuitive connection to nature. The relationship of man to nature is the central theme of Li Bai’s poems.…

In “Mnemonic” by Li-Young Lee a man is looking back on his life while falling asleep. He tries to recall the memory of his father and his blue sweater. He remembers his father wrapping him in the blue sweater when he was cold, but he never gives the sweater back. The boy fondly remembers his father and all the love his father had for him, and the first sign of regret is seen. The sweater is a symbol of love from father to son but the love was unrequited and the boy, now a man, wants nothing more than to show his father how much he loves him. The man’s loving memory quickly shifts to one of disappointment. He recalls his father’s memory and how complex it was, saying that he was “A man who forgot nothing” (l 13). He then thinks of his own memory saying “ There is no order / to my memory, a heap / of…
