This is an onomatopoeia because it imitates the sound of a gunshot. This helps the poem become more lively and interesting by this use of onomatopoeia as you can hear the gunshot which correlates with death. Furthermore, this bluntly states the theme which is that drugs kill people and helps the theme become more impactful. This also helps set the mood of the poem which would be frightful as when you hear the “BOOM” you will imagine a gun shot.
