"Our envy always lasts longer than the happiness of those we envy." Heraclitus. The poem, "My Rival" by Rudyard Kipling, is about a young girl and an older woman both at a ball and the younger is watching, envying, the older and comparing. This poem consists of many tones and meanings, along with interesting representation.
"My Rival" has an abundance of tones and meanings. There are a few of with that stand out more then others and seems to be the main ones. Such as, throughout the whole poem the young girl is envious of the older woman who is adored by men while she is a simple wallflower. The men follow the older woman and grovel at her feet, this suggest that beauty comes with age and experience. Near the end there is the mention of revenge, it is what could be called a 'slow revenge' plan, the young girl says how the old ears beauty will fade and she will grow old. This hints at the fact that eventually everyone will get what they deserve.
The picture I took is of two dolls, one is an old yet very beautiful doll that represents the older woman and the second doll, in the background on the couch, represents the younger girl. The porcelain doll is a hand-me-down and has been kept in near perfect condition, many different people have adored her for this. The other doll is a new version of a raggedy ann doll she is not know for her looks and is quite dull, especially compared the the other doll. Most people would be drawn to the porcelain doll without giving the ann doll a second thought.
Overall I defiantly found taking the picture and finding my poem to be the most entertaining, but none of it was especially difficult other then piece together the information for the essay. The picture was fun to work with, taking it, setting it up, and even editing it slightly. It stars my two favorite dolls at I own, the porcelain doll was given to me by my great-great grandmother and the ann doll was a gift for my birthday. It was funny trying to set
