Poetry Writing Task Second Draft-"For Anne"

The theme in the poem "For Anne" by Leonard Cohen is telling the readers how one should treat people or things greatly and right before losing it and regretting. Leonard Cohen feel that he did not treat Anne greatly before she is gone so he wrote a poem "For Anne" for Anne who is now gone. I know that this poem is about Anne because the title of this poem is "For Anne" which show that this poem is for Anne. Also with the poem starting with "With Anne gone" I can predict Anne being gone or she left the writer. The writer compares his life with Anne and without Anne. Stanford and University of California alumni Sandra Lim reads from The Wilderness on April 7, 2015, at Prairie Lights. As an alumna from the International Writing Program Lim was making her return back to Iowa City after 11 years. In The Wilderness Lim reads a collection of poems about love, spring and one poem that caught my attention was about the individual struggle of one's body within one’s mind. The poems are open to many interpretations but that is the way that I chose to interpret that poetry in particular. The interesting thing about Lim’s poem is how describes the body parts in some of her poems. It is very vague. It almost makes me feel a little bit uncomfortable but at the same time, I really like her style. The way she describes…

Just as poetry is a permanent mark of feelings that last forever on paper, tattoos are permanent symbols that last forever on the skin. Tattoos and poetry can easily be combined such as in Kim Addonizio’s sonnet, “First Poem for You,” the speaker admires her partner’s nature themed tattoos in a darkened room. This may seem to be a simple poem, but by utilizing tattoos as symbols, including tactile and visual imagery in her poem, and using the sonnet as her structure, Addonizio laments about the true meaning of relationships and their longevity.…

Imagine being abused, hit, yelled at, and left alone without the most important feeling of love. Growing up without a shoulder to cry on or a hand to hold. How would these actions sculpt you as an individual? Would they compel you to do the same actions to your own loved ones, or show them love and compassion, which your life had lacked? Poets tend to write pieces of literature as reflections back on their personal lives, describing situations that stay afloat in their heads. Sharon Olds’ happened to be one of these poets, who expressed her upsetting past relationship with her father and current relationships with her children through these works of art. In Olds’ first poems, she…

Despite using essentially the same music to both opening numbers, Sondheim’s lyrics contrasts each other both in theme and in vocabulary that it provides a completely unique atmosphere for the audience. In the opening number “Bounce” it is important to notice the usage of rhyme particularly in the duet portions of the song “You’re hot, then you’re not… Find a new road/Forge a new trail/Bounce” (5-26). In this passage, Sondheim invokes his mentor Oscar Hammerstein’s purpose of rhyme is to give a character intellect and reveal an important motif to the story. The poems ‘Annabel Lee’ by Edgar Allan Poe and ‘Porphyria’s lover’ by Robert Browning are emotion and thought provoking. A commonly asked question concerning poetry is asked many a time. Do poems have any relevance in today’s society? The French poet Paul Valery said during his prime that poems are “the unique intersection of language and state of mind." It is shown in everyday life through communication between people, expressing oneself, music as well as basic marketing. Poetry has evolved to show different sides of every coin yet also remains quite similar in modern times. Emily Dickinson’s ‘’There is Another Sky’’ and Shel Silverstein’s ‘’ Where the Sidewalk Ends’’ highlight the similarities between poems today in terms of theme, content/imagery and technique as well as the subtle and vast differences concerning the topic surrounding death.…

It can be said that struggles bring people together and, at the same time, break them apart. When two people realize their life situations are quite similar are controlled by fundamentalism, they tend to stay close to one another for comfort and understanding, even though they share nothing in interest. However one will eventually attempt a change, to try and manipulate their circumstances for the better or to leave. The other is inevitably left alone and desolate. Although a complicated kindness entwines many such consequences from social issues and other obstacles deep inside its storylines, it reveals its dominant theme in the conclusion: that love endures in the end. Love will make hardships tolerable, will bind people together in spirit if not in a physical sense, and will brighten the optimism in the heart.…
