Have you ever thought of yourself as untouchable? Maybe you just won the soccer league you play in or got a raise at work. Now have you ever had a dream? Chances are pretty good you have, but the second you woke up it vanished. In The Haunted Mind by Nathaniel Hawthorne and The Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allen Poe the philosophical idea of dreams collides with the stubborn feelings of being sacrosanct.…

“The Masque of the Red Death” displays the gothic element of a character's motivation caused by fear. Prince Prospero insured his and his guests safety with “The courtiers, having entered, brought furnaces and massy hammers and welded the bolts” (Poe 430). In order to protect himself and the guests from the contagion he had the doors of the abbey sealed shut. The fear of getting the contagion caused Prince Prospero to seal himself in the abbey. Prince Prospero’s fear is not only shown towards the contagion but towards the masked figure. After he saw the masked figure, Prince Prospero shouted, “Who dares insult us with the blasphemous mockery? Seize him and unmask him - that we may know whom we have to hang at sunrise” (Poe 433). Prince…

“I never want to die” a phrase uttered by one man, but a thought nearly universal. Edgar Allen Poe’s allegorical short story The Masque of the Red Death is an unflawed demonstration of mankind’s unwillingness to face demise. In the story, a hideous plague is prevalent in the kingdom of Prince Prospero. In a selfish act to save himself and many of his light-hearted friends from the terrible pestilence, he abandons his people and shuts himself in his opulent abbey. With his only concern being to have a luxurious and enjoyable experience. The prince has a voluptuous masked ball despite the misery of his lands. Yet, the prince’s attempt to escape and forget death ultimately fails. The theme of this story is that death is inevitable and impossible to ignore. The ebony clock represents the theme, which is evident through its chime’s powerful ability to produce unwanted sentiments in Prince Prospero’s guest and the clock itself shows the progression of life.…
Man is insignificantly cursed with constantly craving power, attention and control over what they have no jurisdiction in.“Prospero attempts to control death by fitting it into his own work as a motif rather than as a reality”(Dudley). FOR the most wild, yet most homely narrative, which I am about to pen, I neither expect nor solicit belief. Mad indeed would I be to expect it, in a case where my very senses reject their own evidence. Yet, mad am I not -- and very surely do I not dream. But to-morrow I die, and to-day I would unburden my soul. My immediate purpose is to place before the world, plainly, succinctly, and without comment, a series of mere household events. In their consequences, these events have terrified -- have tortured -- have destroyed me. Yet I will not attempt to expound them. To me, they have presented little but Horror -- to many they will seem less terrible than baroques. Hereafter, perhaps, some intellect may be found which will reduce my phantasm to the common-place -- some intellect more calm, more logical, and far less excitable than my own, which will perceive, in the circumstances I detail with awe, nothing more than an ordinary succession of very natural causes and effects.…

Edgar Allan Poe wrote stories that incorporated many different kinds of symbols, they are especially prominent in "The Masque of the Red Death." Out of the many uses of symbolism the best use of it in this story is with the different colored rooms. Though what may seem like a minor detail at first the colored rooms yield a greater significance in the story. The rooms have been arranged in a specific color order starting with the blue room in the east working its way to the black room to the west. Through these rooms Edgar was able to symbolize the human life cycle and link it with the sun's cycle. Each of the rooms symbolized a different time period in human life, it began with the blue room which stood for birth and led up to the black room which stood for death:…
H. Bell, Jr. acknowledges by means of analysis in “‘The Masque of the Red Death’: An Interpretation’’ that the actions and the symbols characters create can lead to death. All seven rooms, “represent Prospero’s life span … [and] represent the seven decades of his life” (102) according to Bell. Entering each room allows one to become closer and closer to the final room, the room of death. Additionally, Bell states that the apartments are “crooked and winding” (102) instead of being straight and long. The way the apartments are laid out suggests that Prince Prospero has lived a more difficult life than others. Furthermore, all seven rooms are represented by a different color, which symbolizes a different time or decade in Prince Prospero life. It starts with blue in the first room to represent beginnings and the Prince’s birth, and ends with the seventh room as black to represent ends and Prince’s inevitable death. Moreover, Bell reasons that Prospero runs head first at Death is due to, “acting from a self-destructive urge- attracted to that which he probably at the same time morally fears”(105). Due to the Prince’s headstrong attitude, the Prince wants to destroy Death but knows that he will never be able to defeat Death. Bell affirms that death can be caused when characters take action and create…

Another symbol Poe uses in the “Masque of the Red Death” is room 1, the blue room to represent life. In the story Poe uses room one to display life and he says, “That at the eastern extremity was hung, for example, in blue—and vividly blue were its windows” (Poe 2). This quote from Poe shows that the Blue Room is on the eastern side of the castle.…
