Poetic Diction Of The Eagle By Alfred Lord Tennyson
Have you ever had to analyze a poem? Well it’s one of the hardest tasks to accomplish, and many students around the world are tasked to do it year after year. However, there are many great poems to analyze such as Alfred Lord Tennyson’s, the Eagle. Therefore, some factors to consider when analyzing a poem are poetic diction, rhyme and meter, poetic devices, and figurative language and symbolism. One factor to consider when analyzing a poem is the poetic diction. When it comes to the poetic diction of the poem, the Eagle, the author uses words like wrinkled and crawls to describe the sea, thunderbolt to describe the eagle falling, and crooked to describe the eagle’s talons. Therefore, I would say that the language is appropriate for describing an eagle and its life. I also think the language adds to the meaning of the poem rather than detract from it because it makes the poem or the eagles life seem realistic and interesting. Another factor to consider when analyzing a poem is the use of rhyme and meter. One factor I mentioned is rhyme. In the Eagle, Alfred Lord Tennyson uses rhyme scheme and end rhyme. He uses this when he states “The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls; he watches from his mountain walls, And like a …show more content…
The author uses alliteration when he states “He clasps the crag with crooked hands” (Tennyson 1). This sentence uses alliteration because the same letters or sounds occur in the words clasps, crag, and crooked. Another example of the use of alliteration is when the author states “Close to the sun in lonely lands” (Tennyson 1). Again, this sentence uses alliteration because the same letters or sounds occur in the words lonely and lands. Finally, the last example of alliteration is when the author states “He watches from his mountain walls” (Tennyson 2). This sentence uses alliteration because, like previous examples, the same letters or sounds occur in the words watches and

In “Eagle Song” an author named Joy Harjo uses an expanded metaphor that depicts a prayer to an eagle which explains how prayers are out of people’s control. This poem uses symbolism to depict the circle of life from the author’s abstract perspective. Joy starts off the poem by introducing the idea that prayers are carried out of people and into the “sky, to earth, to sun, to moon.” Despite the ability that humans have to pray to these four objects, it is impossible to their prayers to be answered; although some prayers may seem to be answered because opportunity for good fortune is a possibility. Joy reiterates her realization throughout that poem that…

The reader can infer that sounds in the poem are coming from line 1, 4, and 6. In line one the writers says the eagle clasps the crag with crooked hands, I can hear the eagles sharp talons scratching against the rocks. In line four the writer says the wrinkled sea beneath him crawls in that line I can hear the gentle waves splashing against big rocks. In line six the author says and like a thunderbolt he falls in this line I hear a eagle swooping down to the ground with wind whistling through his wings. This show that the author uses good words in describing the actions of the eagle.…

In ‘Godiva’ Tennyson begins with the use of first person narrative in the short refrain at the beginning of the poem, which effectively separates him from the story itself and also the medieval past in which it is set. Tennyson represents himself as hanging round with ‘grooms and porters’, maybe showing him in a noble light as he is willing to lower himself to the lower classes, thus linking him with Lady Godiva’s gesture of solidarity. The first person narration also adds a certain personal tint to open the poem; it is something, which Tennyson really feels strongly about.…

Numerous readers don’t look inside a poem like they should to really find out what it means. Anyone can look at the title and come up with a subject or theme about the poem and it can be completely irrelevant to the poem. So you should always read it more than once. Try reading it three times at a minimum. The first time you read It is to just get an overall view of the poem and the second time you’ll understand it a little bit more. The third time you should start picking out words you don’t know and work your way up to analyzing it slowly line by line.…

The Eagle a classic work of literature with a simplistic tone and theme being the analysis of an eagle prowling and taking flight. Figurative language such as "with crooked hands," "close to the sun," "the wrinkled sea beneath him crawls. " "He clasps the crag with crooked hands." Poems are riddled with figurative language, and The Eagle is no exception, personified objects and animals are the easiest way to relate to anybody. As if an eagle could have hands rather than the talons that birds are a custom to having. "…
