Introduction: Sometimes, the emotion found its thought, and the thought found its words,.that is poetry, and that is our topic for today.
Body:
Poetry-it is the language of the imagination.
-is an imaginative awareness of experience expressed through meaning sound,and rhythmic language choices so as to evoke an emotional response.
-a term applied to the many forms in w/c human beings have given rhythmic expression to their most imaginative and intense perceptions of the world,themselves,and the relation of the two.
-deals w/ emotions as they are aroused by some scene,experience,attachment; often rich in sentiment and passion.
Usual themes in poetry:
Love, death, brotherhood, inhumanity, loneliness, joy.
Purposes of Poetry:
1.Move an individual to tears or laughter.
2.Stir the insights of the readers.
3.Stimulate the imagination of the reader.
4.Lift the burden of a heavy heart.
5.Erase and relax tension in a troubled world.
Forms of Poetry:
1.Couplet-a stanza of two lines
Ex: The play’s the thing Wherein I’ll catch the conscience of the King.
2.Tercet-a stanza of three lines
Ex: When as in silks my Julia goes, Then,then,methinks,how sweetly flows. The liquefaction of her clothes.
3.Quatrain-a stanza of four lines.
Ex: T yger,Tyger,burning bright In the forest of the night, What immortal hand or eye Could frame thy fearful symmetry?
Genres of Poetry
*Narrative Poetry- a narrative poem is one that tells a story.Types of narrative poetry include ballads and epics.
*Lyric Poetry- a highly musical verse that expresses the emotions of the speaker. Common types are sonnets,odes,free verse,and elegies.
*Dramatic Poetry- a dramatic poem is a verse that relies heavily on dramatic elements such as monologue or dialogue. Two types of dramatic poetry are dramatic monologue and soliloquy.
*Epic Poetry- this is often defined as lengthy poems concerning events of a heroic or important nature to the culture of the time.
*Satirical Poetry- poetry can be a powerful vehicle for satire.
*Elegiac Poetry- is a mournful,melancholy or plaintive poem,especially a lament for the dead or a funeral song.
*Prose Poetry- is a hybrid genre that shows attributes of both prose and poetry.
*Speculative Poetry- also known as fantastic poetry,is a poetic genre w/c deals thematically w/ subjects w/c are beyond reality; whether via extra polation as in science fiction or via weird and horrific themes as in horror fiction.
Diction:
#Choice of words is of great importance in poetry.
#Words or combinations of words are painstakingly chosen by the poet for their exactness as well as suggestiveness.
#The cannotative value of a word is particularly important to the poet.
Tone:
#The attitude of the poet or the persona or the speaker in the poem .
#The tone of voice varies according to the emotional state of the speaker.
#In order to identify tone in poetry, one should be sensitive to the inner state of the speaker.
