The poem was constructed in first person, this gives the story a very personal feeling from the author. Dixon shares the thoughts of the characters through the language he uses, for example in the fourth stanza ‘beware of their bold, cold stares, those icy snake eyes are looking down’ take the readers through the mind…
This Victorian poem is about the narrator (a fallen woman), the Lord and Kate. It is a ballad which tells the story from the narrator’s perspective about being shunned by society after her ‘experiences’ with the lord. The poem’s female speaker recalls her contentment in her humble surroundings until the local ‘Lord of the Manor’ took her to be his lover. He discarded her when she became pregnant and his affections turned to another village girl, Kate, whom he then married. Although the speaker’s community condemned the speaker as a ‘fallen’ woman, she reflects that her love for the lord was more faithful than Kate’s. She is proud of the son she bore him and is sure that the man is unhappy that he and Kate remain childless. Some readers think that she feels more betrayed by her cousin than the lord. This poem is a dramatic monologue written in the Victorian era.…
The diction in this poem prepares the reader for the speaker's concluding response because it shows that the speaker remembers the event very vividly; therefore it must be a very significant event in his life. An example of this is when he describes a cloud as "paled, pulsed, compressed, distended" (line 20). Another example is when he describes the flocks of flying geese as "great straggling V's" (line 9). Also, when the speaker says "as if out of the Bible or science fiction" it lets the reader know that the event is…
Bishop based this poem off villanelle written in iambic pentameter, which has an ABA rhyme scheme that forms a couplet rhyme in the end quatrain. This poem is exemplary for expressing the sound units of words, and sentences. The sound units of the words are phonetically connected by the use of alliteration. Prominent examples of this lie in the use of the soft ‘L’s’, the hiss of the letter ‘S’, with the contrast of distinct T’s. The poem contains assonants of the sound ‘uh’ and ‘oo.’ These sound units ‘bind,’ (p.153), words of the sentence together.…
Chapter 10-18“The greater a man’s talents, the greater his power to lead astray” Haley page122.-disscuss the ironyIn the brave new world people believe that everyone belongs to someone else. They are born with different caste and appointed jobs. They do not have to or cannot think and worry about anything, because the controllers need absolute submit to their orders. In their formats of human, human should not have talents and a brain to think. In this case, Bernard’s belief, habits, goals and curiosities have brought tension to the controllers. They think that Bernard’s “talents” will lead him or the community to a new theory of life, which is forbidden in the new world. This sentence is a verbal irony, director use the word “astray” to show that man’s talents is a noxious thing to have, which could lead people to corruption. But the truth is that the greater a man’s talents, the greater his power to lead to the understanding of life. (10.7)…
The works we studied within Creative Writing were all helpful in creating my own works to submit to the class. Throughout all of the reading, many of the works inspired me in different ways, whether it was short story plot ideas or word usage in the poems. While crafting my work for the final portfolio, I reviewed many of the poems from our poetry packet in an effort to find inspiration and to create new interesting images. I took the most inspiration for my formal poem, which I found most difficult to write. One of the poems that was most useful to me was Jilly Dybka’s “Memphis, 1976.” Dybka’s poem follows the sestina form; I also wrote my last poem in this form, so it helped to follow the form by looking at her poem as an example. Dybka’s…
In the past, human nature has deprived humans of reaching their goal of equality. Human nature makes people prejudice and tend to judge people as something that they are not. One example is the inhumane treatment of the Jews, especially during the Holocaust. Between 1939 and 1945, nearly six million Jews were killed (McCarthy). During this period of time and even after, many adults and children wrote books and poetry about the sufferings they witnessed and endured as they forced to undergo horrific conditions. One poem written about this horrendous time period is "Remembrance" by Tawnysha Lynch. This poem was written after an obviously heartbreaking visit to the remains of the deserted Auschwitz. In her poem, Lynch expresses her thoughts as she witnessed the setting where millions of people were killed for being Jewish, homosexual, and even handicapped (Soudakoff).…
I picked this poem thinking this seems like a funny title and it would be a confusing poem…

“Slaveship,” by Lucille Clifton, is a free verse poem from the perspective of slaves that the white men capture and trade in the slave trade, forcing them to travel on the Middle Passage. Ironically, the ships bear the names of religious symbols and figures such as Jesus, Angel of God, and Grace of God (lines 14-15) even though the act of slavery is one of the most sinful systems in the eyes of these slaves and in the eyes of all decent human beings.…
In this essay, I will be comparing four poems: Checking out me history; Singh Song; The Ruined Maid and Give. ‘Checking out me history’ By John Agard is a strong piece which shows a hint of anger and almost betrayal as he enlightens us on his knowledge of unknown history. The second poem, ‘Singh Song’ by Daljit Nagra has a stereotypical Indian man who runs one “ov his daddy’s shop” bit it has the theme of romance added. Thirdly, The Ruined Maid by Thomas Hardy, the poem is a conversation between two female friends, the poem depicts a young country girl who has become a rich man’s mistress or a prostitute to escape her own poverty and the friend seems to envy her. Lastly, ‘Give’ by Simon Armitage, the poem is about homelessness and the way society reacts to beggars, the poem is in the eyes and voice of a beggar. I will be exploring the ways these emotional voices are presented and used to challenge the stereotypes.…
The word or phrase that was powerful to me was “She walks in beauty, like the night”…
An author writes a book or novel to have the whole story put right out for you with a clear cut beginning middle and end. A poet can write a “novel” in very minimal lines or a few verses. They tell a story but give the rest for you to think and ponder about. A poet uses multiple literary devices in one single poem. When reading a poem you have to decode or decipher what the poet is really trying to say. They may use metaphors, irony and much more, in the poem “I Finally managed to speak to her”, the poet, Hal Sirowitz uses both of these literary devices.…
