Topic 1: The relationship between Joan and Leah
The discoverer is Leah. This was a first time discovery for Leah as she learn some new information from her mother. This was an unexpected discovery for Leah as the reader get to see her thoughts about how sympathetic she felt about her mum having to live such a painful life at a young age. The process of this discovery was deliberate as Joan saw the confusion that Leah was having and it was evoked by necessity because Joan wanted Leah to understand. This was a meaningful discovery for Leah as she got to understand the information her mother gave her as Joan wanted her to understand why they were going to China and it was also emotional for Leah as she thought her mother didn’t care about the death of her dad. For Leah it was confronting as she got to learn the situations her mother in counted at a young age. It took Leah a while on this journey of a discovery as she finally had some new understandings about what her mother went through.
Topic 2: Ke’s father’s death and the protesting.
The discoverer is Leah. This is a first time discovery for Leah and a rediscovery for Ke about something that has been lost as Ke lost he’s father who died during the Chinese revolution because of what he believed in. The process of this physical and emotional discovery is unexpected as Leah never expected to her all the information about Ke’s father. Ke deliberately tells Leah about what happened to his father and it is evoked by curiosity and wonder as Leah keeps questioning Ke for more information about had happened to his father. The response of this discovery is meaningful because finally Leah discover what her Chinese side of a family experienced which was an emotional event for Ke as has to relive and relate the past to Leah. The ramifications of the discovery are long term and personal because Leah wouldn’t forget about it and she now feels like she’s part of the family. The experience of the discovery was shaped particularly by Ke. As Ke explains the involvement of his father what transpired between his father and the Red Guards. This shapes the context for Leah’s current knowledge of protesting in China.

Topic 3: Symbolism of the coin

The discoverers of the other half coin were Leah and Li Nan. Their motivation was to find what the coin symbolized. It was a first time discovery for the younger generation of the Zhu family. This was a discovery about family as the half coin brought them together as a family. When Leah and Li Nan found the coin they were so happy and glad to finally know that they really were a family and this is shown when Leah is thinking to herself “This is family” everyone was also delighted when they were told that they were related. The process of this discovery was carefully planned for both families as they had to find the other half of the family and make the family whole again before the war that separated the two fathers, Ke and Leah’s great-grandfathers which Leah and Joan came to China to find as well as their Chinese family. The full coin symbolises family togetherness it’s evoked by curiosity as the family wanted to find out the meaning of the coin from the letter. The response of this discovery was thought provoking as they wanted to know what was in the letter and what it meant. This discovery was very meaningful for the family as they reunited as well as found the half coin that was missing that made them found each other again. The Chinese believe in cohesion that’s they’re culture.
