Harris barn. Sarty knows it is not the right thing to do but he also knows he must remain loyal to his father. When it was time to question Sarty they decided to let him off the hook. But, Sarty's father Abner Snopes is advised to leave the country and never come back. After the case was dismissed Sarty and his family went on there way. The next day, they arrived at their home and Adner Snopes wanted to go speak with the new owners and brought Sarty along with him. While walking toward the white mansion Snopes deliberately walks in a pile of poop, barges his way into the home, and makes his way to a white rug and smears the poop all over it. The following day the owner of the rug Mr. de Spain arrives to Sarty's home and brings the rug along for it to be cleaned. The two sisters clean the rug then Snopes and Sarty return the rug back the next morning. When returning the rug back, Mr. de Spain is not happy with the cleaning done to the rug and demands Snopes give him twenty extra bushels of corn to make up for the rug. Snopes did not agree with this charge and decided the next day to go the store where the Justice of the Peace was and reduce the amount of bushels Mr. de Spain required him to pay for the rug. The Justice of the Peace decides Snopes is responsible for the damage but reduces the bushel to ten. After, a long day of Sarty, his father, and brother walking around town they arrived home. After dinner Sarty hears his mother arguing with his father about something. Sarty realizes his father is going to burn Mr. de Spain's barn down, and wants to alert him of what his father is going to do. Sarty tries to make it to Mr. de Spain's home when he suddenly hears gunshots fired. After the gunshots were heard Sarty thought his father is killed and makes his way up to the top of a hill and left everything that has happened behind
