Take Home DNA Extraction Lab
If I used Dish soap instead of Liquid detergent then the DNA would take longer to rise because of the type of soap.
Materials:
-6 cups
-Liquid Detergent
-Spinach
-Blender
-Strainer
-Meat Tenderizer
-Rubbing alcohol 90%
-Flat tooth Picks
-Measuring Cup
-Measuring Spoon
-Salt
-Water
Safety Precautions 1. Wear Safety goggles just in case anything gets in your eyes 2. Wear an apron just in case anything splashes on you
Procedure-
1. Gather all materials 2. Get about a half cup of spinach, an 8th of a teaspoon of salt and 1 cup of water, then blend on high for about 15 seconds. 3. Get an empty container, put a strainer over it and pour it into the container. 4. Add about 2 tablespoons of liquid detergent and mix 5. Let the mixture sit for about 5-10 min 6. Add just a dash of your meat tenderizer Mix it and wait for 5 minutes and add rubbing alcohol 7. DNA should appear 8. Extract the DNA
Observations:
-During the lab I saw that when the alcohol was poured in to the spinach mixture they were separated the alcohol was at the top the spinach was at the bottom.
-Also the DNA slowly formed and attached together slowly.
Conclusion-
-Overall I think the experiment went well I think I was happy with the results and the experiment was fun and enjoyable. I learned that you can use some common house hold items to extract DNA from an organism and that just completely blew my mind. When I just tried the experiment I didn’t think it was possible but my results completely went against everything I was thinking. For someone who is doing this experiment for their first time I would suggest using spinach because I think it gives the best
