Background Information: Post-1983 pennies have a copper jacket and a zinc core. We hope to determine the percent composition of these two metals. This will be done by reacting the zinc with hydrochloric acid to form zinc ions in a single replacement reaction. The acid reacts with the zinc but not copper. The reaction of zinc metal with the hydrochloric acid (HCl) produces zinc chloride and hydrogen gas. Safety: Wear your safety goggles and apron If you spill Hydrochloric acid on yourself, rinse with water Procedure: DAY I 1. Take a post-1983 penny and, using a triangular file, etch an “X” on one side of the penny. Also etch a notch on the edge of the penny in the four positions shown in the diagram. 2. Mass and record the mass of the penny. 3. Using a graduated cylinder, measure 60.0 mL of 3.0 M HCl and pour it into your 100mL beaker. 4. Place the penny in the HCl solution etch side up and record observations for 3-5 minutes. 5. Place the beaker in your lab drawer. 6. Answer question #1 for tomorrow. Read and prepare a data table for Day II. DAY II 1. Using your forceps, carefully remove the fragile copper jacket that is left from the penny. Rinse it gently in distilled water. 2. Dry the penny in acetone solution. Swirl the penny in the solution. 3. Pour the acid solution from your beaker into the waste container at the center table. Rinse and dry your beaker. 4. Take a magic marker and write your lab drawer number on the side of your 50 mL beaker. 5. Place the penny in the beaker and put the beaker on the appropriate shelf of the drying oven. DAY III 1. Mass and record the mass of the dry copper jacket. 2. Complete the questions and calculations for tomorrow.…

The purpose of this experiment is to prepare a standard solution of potassium hydrogen phthalate and use titration to perform an acid/base reaction between the potassium hydrogen phthalate and sodium hydroxide to standardize approximately 0.10 M sodium hydroxide solution. To prepare the Potassium Hydrogen phthalate, a 2.00 grams of KHP was measured to an accurate measurement of 1.980 grams. A total of 100 mL of water was mixed with the KHP solution in the volumetric flask to finally prepare an acidic KHP solution. The molar mass of KHP was calculated and came to be 208.252 grams per mole. To find the moles of KHP, the mass of KHP (1.980 g) was divided by the molar mass of KHP ( 208.252 g) and .00951 moles are in the 1.980 grams of KHP. To find the molarity, the number of moles of KHP (.00951 moles) was divided by the volume of water in liters (.100 L) giving an answer of 0.0951 M.…

In thinking of film's that are able to exemplify many film elements that are put together in an interesting and organized manner the movie Rumble Fish comes to mind. The director Francis Ford Coppola demonstrates how metaphors are able to help decipher a deeper meaning of the film. Rumble Fish is a film that is about growing up and seeing new things that have never been seen before. The two main characters who are brothers Rusty James and the Motorcycle Boy, experience internal conflicts. Rusty James the younger of the two looks up to his brother and wants to be like him. However the elder has grown out of his previous demeanor of always fighting and he doesn't want his brother to follow in his steps. Throughout the film he ask Rusty James why he is following him. The Motorcycle Boy knows that his brother is somewhat trapped in the city and someone needs to get him out or set him free. He looks to the fish in the pet store to explain this and it is how he relates to his brothers problems. This is the scene that will be examined of when Rusty James is in the pet store with his brother and they are looking at the fish. It has been explained how much everyone in town looks up to the Motorcycle Boy, and on numerous occasions Rusty James said he was going to look like him when he was older. Even though the Motorcycle Boy never shows much affection, he wants something better for his brother, and even though he never tells his brother to leave until the end when he knows he is going to die, he tries to let him know through the fish. So until this point in the movie the viewer never really knows how the Motorcycle Boy feels about his brother.…

In 23 years of field work, Napoleon Chagnon has observed and recorded the histories of 60 Yanomami villages. In recent years, his writings have contributed to the label of the Yanomami as a 'fierce' people. He has created an image of these people which is not only questionable from an anthropological perspective, but also an image that has brought detriment to their society as a whole. By analyzing Chagnon's interpretations of the Yanomami lifestyle, one sees that his ideas are highly influenced by western standards of life and can be rethought using basic non-biased logic.…

It was a hot blistering summer day not a leaf in sight or a hint of shade to be found. Mouth is dry as cotton from thirst and hands bleeding and blistering from a hard days work, exhausted from fatigue and hunger, because Master had me out here since the crack of dawn. Tending to the crops in the field and told me not come until every last crop has been tended which is about three football fields long. This is some of the Vigorous work that slaves had to endure. Slavery is a big part of American history. Many of the African Americans you see today are descendants of the 500,000 plus Africans who were sent to North America as slaves. To work the degrading lower class works of the Europeans with no wages or dignity to have. Slavery had existed in America for almost 250 years. In the United States, slaves had no rights. According to the Constitution, a slave was considered three-fifths of a person. A slave could be bought and sold just like a cow or horse. Slaves had no say in where they lived or who they worked for. They had no representation in government. Slaves could not own property and were not allowed to learn or be taught how to read and write. Slavery came to an end in 1865 when the 13th Amendment came into play after the end of the Civil War. One of those 500,000 slaves was Henry Bibb an American slave.…

There are many goals of parole to a parolee. First, parole is earned through good behavior and self-improvement. The only difference in parole and probation is that if you are on parole, you have been to prison. The main concept of parole is to return the offender gradually to productive lives. Parole serves as a reward for good behavior while in prison. This meaning that the inmate has had no fights or write ups or any sort. The inmate is contributing to a less violent behavior within walls of a prison by providing an incentive to behavior to behave well. Community based treatment for those offenders who no longer need to be isolated from the community. Parolees that are released are at a lower cost than being incarcerated (www.people.missouristate.edu). There are conditions of parole that must be followed. Each parolee is assigned a parole officer they must report to. They will have routine appointments, how often is determined by the officer that must be attended. There is no associating with anyone with a criminal record. A full time job must be kept unless approved by your officer. No alcoholic beverages or illegal drugs will be consumed. Follow all instruction that your officer instructs you to do. If community service has been ordered make sure that the hours are completed. If there is restitution get it paid or make payment plans. There are conditions that are made that can affect your parole. If the parolee fails to report to their officer, fails to participate in a stipulated treatment program, or abuses drugs or alcohol while under supervision. There are many more conditions that can affect a person possibly going back to prison. There is a law that was enacted in 1984 called the Truth-In Sentencing Law that will possibly reduce prison time. This law is to offer greater protection of the victims of the crime and their families. Therefore, the law states that the offender is to…
