Polar bears can live up to thirty years, but the average life expectancy for a polar bear is between fifteen and eighteen years. In the months of October and November, female polar bears dig dens beneath the snow. This is where they will give birth to cubs. After four months of growing and developing safe in their den, polar bear cubs get taken out by their mother to hunt for a meal of seal meat. Polar bears generally do not live together, even in family groups. If they do encounter one, they will either fight, play, or carry on walking and simple ignore each other.
Polar bears have strong hind legs, and their front paws are slightly webbed making it easier to swim. Their Latin name “Ursus maritimus” literally means ‘sea bear’. Polar bears can swim for hours and over long distances. A polar bear also has five toes on each paw, and its claws are thick, black, and curved. Their heads are small, but they have a long muzzle, and in their case sniffing each other is a way of saying ‘hello’. Polar bears have large noses with nostrils they can close when they swim. They also have dark, outward-facing, brown eyes, and ears that lie flat when they’re under water.
Polar bears are solitary animals. However they enjoy playing and having friendly wrestling matches when they do meet up. However there are occasions when bears cannot find enough food or territory and they fight each other for it. This fights can get very aggressive and violent. Other times they like to relax and spread themselves out on the ice whenever they get too warm
