Un-linear in fashion, the narrative is halted by excerpts of myth, which inform the reader of just one of Odysseus countless feats. As told by the bard Demodokos, the inner tales of “the quarrel between Odysseus and Achilleus son of Peleus”(8.75) and “the love between Aries and lovely-Aphrodite”(8.267) are symbolically significant, and draws a parallel with the outer story.…
The engrossing story, The Odyssey, tells the tale of the heroic Odysseus’ journey to reach home after the Trojan War. In the first four books, the reader learns about Odysseus through other characters eyes. They follow the footsteps of Telemakhos, the son of Odysseus, and his awakening to save his father. Telemakhos’s house is being overrun by his mother's’ suitors, however dear Penelope can’t help change that. Telemakhos is then visited by Athena, in which she arouses him and gives him the confidence and steady mind to search for word on his father. Telemakhos and the reader can interpret from the stories told about Odysseus that he was an important warrior and is thought to be dead. Therefore he is held to a higher respect than most Trojan…

In the readings of the four articles, they have address the problem with polarization in the people and cultural division. In Wilson's and Fiornia's articles they both mention how there is a deep division in America but Fiornia believes that the American public are more concerned about solving their political problems than the division. According to Wilson, he's view are some-what opposite, he believes that this cultural division will not fade since it was born when this country started. In Judis's article, he also mentions the division in the American public, but he chooses the popular group that has the media's eye which is the Tea Parties. He mentions how there is a division between the Tea Parties and the government and that some of their problems will fade. In the article of my choosing which was Partisan Mood: Polarization and the Dynamics of Mass Party Preferences, was about how the American public are categorized in political groups or parties due to their personal, political or religious views. Even though some of these articles are about the division between small political parties or the division of the Republicans and Democrats, there are still a division in America which can be harmful to trying to keep the United States united.…

The book starts with Odysseus, who is still dressed as a beggar, speaking to his son Telemakhos about their plan to kill the suitors out of spite for trying to marry Penelope. Odysseus commands his son to hide the suitor’s weapons so that will not be able to fight back. He also commands the maid Eurykelia to lock the women in their quarters so they will not witness the carnage. After Telemakhos obeys, a light brightens the room and Telemakhos believes that this is a sign from the gods of their approval. When the preparations are finished, Odysseus is invited to join Penelope in the manor to speak so she can learn about who he is. When they meet, Penelope asks Odysseus questions like where are you from, who are you, and who are your parents. In response, Odysseus starts by complimenting Penelope’s beauty and then says that the telling of…

Odysseus goes through his road of trials when he is at the realm of Circe on the island of Aeaea (Hamilton 305). The road of trials is when the hero is beset by a series of tests, ordeals, or challenges, and is often aided by a supernatural aid or by an amulet or other magical device. In the realm of Circe, a group of Odysseus’ men were turned into swine, but luckily Hermes gave Odysseus an herb that would make him immune to her powers and because of his immunity, she fell in love with him and began to help them. Odysseus comes across his women as temptress at the nymph, Calypso’s island, where he was a virtual prisoner (Hamilton 295). A women as temptress is someone or something that distracts the hero from his journey, but the hero must conquer, ignore, or fool the temptress. Calypso loved Odysseus and wanted to keep him forever, so she overwhelmed him with kindness, but everyday Odysseus ignore her and go on the seashore and long for his home, his wife, and his son. Odysseus’ encounters with the road of trials and the women as temptress indicate that he had gone through the initiation…
The first person perspective used by Margaret Atwood in The Penelopiad gives us valuable insight of the true motives and feelings of Penelope’s character. In the chapter “Waiting” of the Penelopiad, we get a clear glimpse into how lonely Penelope is in Odysseus’s absence. Penelope tells us that “Despite all the…
Book 11 of Homer’s The Odyssey continues Odysseus’s tale of how he came to arrive in Scheria, with him relating his voyage to the underworld. He makes the interesting choice of cutting his narrative choice halfway through his tale in order to incite a reaction from his Phaeacian audience. Odysseus makes this interruption because he is telling his tale not to relate what actually occurred in his travels, but because he needed help from the Phaeacians and used the story to obtain that help.…

Sophocles' Oedipus Rex revolves around the story of Oedipus, who now is King of Thebes, searching for the murderer of the past king. The tragedy is not so much that Oedipus is the murderer and committing incest with his mother. After all, he was fated to do so, and Oedipus commits these crimes unknowingly. The real tragedy of Oedipus is his trying to defy his destiny and compounding the troubles with his pride. Oedipus has the chance to stop the search for the murderer before the investigation starts. Even blind Teiresias, who tells Oedipus that he is the guilty party, wants Oedipus to stop although Teiresias can see the outcome and knows Oedipus' destiny. It is Oedipus' pride that, in telling the members of his court that he will search for the murderer, leads him down the ever narrowing path to the truth and his pride that will not allow him to stop the search.…
One of the many aspects that Oedipus failed to perceive were the clues of his own past that he refused to analyze. Oedipus learned that Lauis was traveling with four men and was killed by one, yet he never connected the fact that he knew he killed a man of the same description. These foresights to his own identity would’ve been vital to his potential wellness, but his passion overtook reason as he failed to observe all possibilities. Not only did Tiresias give Oedipus the clues to solve his riddle, but says: “Oh yes, detected in his very heart of home: his children’s father and their brother, son and husband to his mother, bed rival to his father and assassin.” Tiresias plainly tells Oedipus his identity, and how he has sinned by marrying his mother and killing his father. However, Oedipus decides to ignore this more than plain explanation and forget about it, being determined to put the blame on Creon out of his passionate rage.…
In this passage of Demodocus' Song from Book VIII of The Odyssey , “A Day for Songs and Contests”, Homer creates a contrasting effect in presenting the nature of Odysseus between the two paragraphs, one conveys strength and power, while the expresses melancholy and mourning. This is shown though the usage of diction and imagery.…
In a time when wealth and power was triumphed over truth and justice, dysfunctionality was a result of immoral practices. In Oedipus Rex, the readers come to see the blind sighted nature of Oedipus which leads him to murdering his biological father with the ultimate goal of marrying his biological mother, Jocasta. As the tragedic play progresses, the readers discover that Apollo has made clear that whoever has murdered Laios must be “killed or exiled.†(Lines…) This leads to a townsperson, Choragos, to introduce Oedipus to Teiresias, who is a holy prophet that has knowledge of all the occurrences in Thebes. Teiresias avoids telling Oedipus the truth of who the murderer is, but Oedipus wants to know the truth. As the…
