In September of 1993, Christopher Simmons broke into the suburban St. Louis home of Shirley Crook with the intention to rob and possibly kill her. Simmons and a friend tied the victim up with duct tape and drove her to a nearby state park. At the park, Simmons pushed the victim, who was still alive, off of a bridge and into the Meramec River where she drowned. Simmons was 17 years old at the time of the murder. Before the crime, he had told several of his friends of the plan to burglarize a home and kill the occupants, noting that they could do it and “get away with it” (not get charged for it) because they were juveniles. 1…

In society today there are more criminals in the boundaries of the state prison system than there are in the federal prison system. According to Bureau of Justice Statistics (2009) the United States state prison system has 1,405,622 within their jurisdiction; whereas, the United States federal prison system has 208,118 within their jurisdiction. The reason that the federal prison system has only 208,118 within their jurisdiction is that this system only deals with “the body of law consisting of the United States Constitution, federal statutes and regulations, United States treaties, and federal common law” (Black’s Law Dictionary, (1990). This paper will contrast and compare the various federal prisons that housed the following individuals who committed crimes against the federal statutes: Martha Stewart, Ivan Boesky, Michael Milken, Manuel Noriega, Timothy McVeigh, Terry Nichols, Alphonse Capone, and the infamous John Gotti. It shall also provide the differences from one prison to another.…

I believe that one of the most significant problems relating to crime is the number of inmates that are committing crimes after release and are incarcerated again, known as recidivism. Why is this happening and what can be done to further prevent it?…

Throughout history there have been numerous groups protesting against government laws. Take, for example, Mahatma Gandhi’s Salt March, Martin Luther King’s Civil Rights Movement, and the Women’s Rights Movement. What do all of these significant events have in common? They are all acts of nonviolent civil disobedience that have drastically altered society’s moral code. Each of the movements mentioned had a purpose of ensuring that the group they are representing has an equal opportunity and an equal access to their country's rights as others. However, still many people in a free society believe acts of civil disobedience are unjust and harmful to people within society; though, more often than not, these groups object to an injustice in hopes of correcting and feel their actions are essential to the development of society.…
