On August 25th 2016, at about 1846 hours, I was working as 5T76. I was dressed in full OPD uniform and driving unmarked patrol car 1151. I responded to the 8500 block of Dowling St to assist OPD units with the search of an attempt murder suspect.
As I was driving to the scene OPD helicopter unit advised that the suspect (later ID as Christopher Malik) was hiding in the rear yard of 8515 Dowling St. Once I arrived on scene, units advised that the perimeter was set. I then proceeded to assemble a search team with an OPD k-9 to search for the suspect. Due to the nature of the incident I deployed my department issued riffle.
The fist yard we enter was 8515 Dowling St. Officer J. Stine advised that his dog was showing interest in the detached garage of the residence located at end of the driveway. We set up an inner perimeter around the garage and called the suspect by name several times with negative results. I then directed the search team to move forward and set up by the side door of the garage and call the suspect and order him to come out with negative results. As I was scanning the southeast corner of the garage, I saw the suspect squatting behind the plastic containers. I advised the search them that I could see the suspect. Due to the fact that the suspected was wanted for attempted murder and thinking that he could be armed with a firearm or a dangerous weapon, I intentionally pointed my rifle at the suspect. I immediately began to give him commands to stand up and come out from behind the containers. Once we had visual of the suspect we decided to make entry into the room to have triangulation on the suspect. The suspect complied with our commands and he was taken into custody without incident.
