Ohio as well. Clancy (n.d.) says, officers can search large areas that will most likely contain a weapon. Officers should not conduct a detailed search such as turning out pockets. Clancy (n.d.) goes onto say, “Within that framework, the scope of any protective search is based on the circumstances of each case, guided by the principle that the scope of the intrusion must be reasonably related to its…

With times changing and individuals obtaining more powerful mobile, almost every move a person makes can be recorded or looked back on in some sort of way. With this great power, comes great scrutiny for not only everyday individuals, but for the individuals that protect us day in and day out. Law enforcement has suffered more scrutiny, and has obtained a substantial amount of media coverage over the past few years. This coverage has not been positive, and often highlights the mistakes, and aggressive actions taken by the officers of the law. With the framing of police officers changing from being outstanding citizens who uphold the law, to vicious animals who abuse their power, one begins to question the reasoning for all the brutality.…
For most people, the police have been typically seen as the embodiment of fairness and impartiality. Contradictory to this mentality, social inequality exists in law enforcement, arguably the most in the police. This is due to the increased amount of contact with the general populace in their normal lives, as compared to the courts which only deal with the population when they are convicted. This essay will investigate the kinds of social inequalities present in the police, as well as the implications of these inequalities, namely gender specific, racial and sexual discriminations relating to females, ethnic minority groups, and the population in general.…
In the image, the words are both strong and direct, “I’m going to kick your ass” is bigger, bolder and is at the top of the image. The second part of that sentence, “and get away with it” is at the bottom and is slightly smaller. The image also has the words “public” on the left hand corner and “service” on the right hand corner at the top. It also has “serve” and “protect” at the bottom corners of the image. The image is implying that white policemen can get away with beating up an innocent person. This is usually aimed at black and brown people. It shows that police brutality has been a problem in our society, not just of today, but in the past couple of centuries. The image has only three different colors which are used in a way that symbolizes that it has been around for a while now and nothing has changed. The image was made in 2007 and was reposted online by the creator Shepard Fairey after the Michael Brown case.…
Police brutality is the unlawful use of power, act or authority by the policepersons on the civilians (Russell-Brown 2009). Police brutality is an unfortunate corollary of the dangerous job of protecting society from its worst citizens, an anomaly attributable to the characteristic of individual police officers and the police department (Holmes and Smith, 2008). The actions can be employed with either the use of firearms, other lethal and non-lethal weapons or the improper use of holds or restraining techniques (Belur, 2010). In the United States, the brutality by police officers has been passed on from the time memorial. Police have used forceful methods in trying…
Cases of police brutality are disproportional to the races of the public. African Americans are 3 times more likely to be killed by the police than white people. In 2015, of the African Americans killed, 30% of them were unarmed while 19% of white people, who were killed by the police, were unarmed. The American Civil Liberties Union found that from 2007-2010, blacks were 63% of Boston’s civilian encounters, though blacks are 25% of the Boston population. Of these encounters, 75% of them had essentially no justification by police officers for performing them. Police officers would simply categorize these encounters as “investigate person.” Officers would specifically target certain races, and come up with an excuse to use deadly force. Many…
You’ve heard about it, read about it, and maybe even seen live footage on the news. What is it? Living in the United States, a lot of cases in today’s society are Police Brutality. Police Brutality remains the most critical and divisive human rights violation in the United States of America. We are supposed to trust the police to protect us, not take advantage and abuse the power, we, the people, have invested in them. The immoderate use of police brutality continues because police don’t know how to de-escalate, most cops face no disciplinary threats, and because there are no clear policies on using force. This makes it feasible for officers who do commit brutality and human rights violations to abscond their punishment and repeat their offences.…
I’m excited to write this letter stating my opinion about the article you wrote on the recent event that happen of a middle school student that was slammed to the ground. I disagree that the amount of force was excessive. Police brutality, use of force and discretion have is being abused by officers. This has been a problem for years but now that the public have smart phones and other media sources we see more officers abusing their power.…
This paper will analyze the disparate treatment of women in policing by exploring the attitudes and obstacles that women face in law enforcement, and by discussing why women are important to the changing role of police work. When law enforcement agencies represent the communities they serve it benefits the law enforcement profession and society as whole.…
Our topic is on police brutality. This has been an ongoing problem in our society for many years now. Many people believe that police officers do use excessive force when patrolling on the streets with civilians. The main social problem for our topic relates to the use of excessive force. Excessive force can cost local communities millions of dollars due to legal damages. Most civilians now do believe that all police officers are bad due to all of the drama that has been occurring throughout these last few years. People believe that the main reason why this excessive force takes place is because of racism. Dudek talked about a situation that took place in Ferguson, MO. He stated, “The killing of unarmed teenager Michael Brown in Ferguson, MO,…
Police in society have the role of maintaining order and safety by enforcing policies and laws. These roles provide a special authoritative power over the general population that can sometimes be misused. Unjustified loss of civilian life and other forms of assault by police officers can be explained by the following reasons: a fear of harm that causes knee-jerk negative fight or flight reactions, an invalid fear based on racism, and a lack of proper de-escalation training. All three of these causes have led to past and present cases of police officers overusing their power despite the lack of harm to the officers or public. Political cartoons, statistics, news articles, and real live footage of police officers…
is America is now seeing the true colors of most cops. The cops now-a- days are beating, shooting and asking questions later. In the present day, police think its alright for them to assault or kill a person. Police brutality has to end for three reasons: it's getting worse, cops are getting away with it and America is just going down hill.…
One of the biggest issues in criminal justice right now is the use of force by police officers and more specifically the use of excessive force. This is such an issue in the field of criminal justice because it has led to an almost anti-police movement across America, specifically in those areas where minorities are prominent. This issue is an issue in criminal justice due to the fact that through all of the cases of police brutality across America the public opinion towards police has been hastily decreasing and trust in the police along with it. As seen in the video that shocked New Hampshire back in 2014 (Berg, 2014) of police officers from the Seabrook New Hampshire Police Department slamming Michael Bergeron Jr.’s head into a wall and then using pepper spray on him, showing that police brutality can happen anywhere at any time and to anybody regardless of race or ethnic background. This video caused an uproar throughout the nation in a time when police were already at center stage in the national spotlight for similar incidents. This is an issue that…
