As a result, many officers and law enforcement officials are not trusted by citizens today and some police officers have allowed a negative image to manifest. They have far too much power over anyone else, and any average person can become a police officer. These officers are not trusted because of the history that some have had and continue to create. There is no easy solution to this issue, but we as a community have a lot of power for change so we should try to find one. I have come to a conclusion that it is clear that police behaviour now has to be monitored. An effective way to monitor police behaviour, and therefore prevent violence, is to make it so that an officer has to wear a police body camera whilst …show more content…
In a situation where someone is killed by the police, there is usually only one side to the conflict. Of course the majority is going to believe the officer if they are the only one able to say anything about the matter. If the officer’s camera shows a recording of an incident, the truth would be clear and so no one would be wrongly blamed. If in that situation the police officer really has no other option than to use their gun, the public will not ignore that and they would not be falsely criticised for it. Although there may be some minor flaws to the idea of monitoring both bad and good officers, it is a fact that some form of surveillance is needed. People say that this would be an invasion of privacy, but the cameras would only be expected to be worn in public places. Body cameras are the most logical response to a problem that continues to only get bigger and bigger in the eyes of

Multiple studies have shown that when body worn cameras are in use, police are less likely to behave with the use of force, especially high level uses of force. A report that was released from San Diego, California stated, “High-level use of force -- such as physical takedowns or employing Tasers, chemical agents or weapons -- was down 16.4%,” (Wood). This data was comparing the drops in police misconduct from 2013 to after the installation of body cameras in 2016. The same report from California also affirmed, “Of 520,000 incidents that San Diego officers responded to in 2016, just over 4,600 -- less than 1% -- involved the use of force. After the body cameras were installed,” (Wood). With police members knowing that their actions are being recorded and could be reviewed, they act with less force. Data taken from the Rialto Study in California stated, "[s]hifts without cameras experienced twice as many incidents of use of force as shifts with cameras," and "the rate of use of force incidents per 1,000 contacts was reduced by 2.5 times,” (Garrick). The Rialto study randomly selected fifty-four officers to use a body worn camera, those officers encountered less situations where the use of force was needed. Body cameras need to become part of the police uniform because they reduce the use of force, especially the high…
