Deborah Flores, Superintendent

Gilroy, CA 95020

Dear Superintendent Flores,

Bullying is a worldwide issue that needs to be undertaken and resolved. This hateful act usually starts at a young age and persists into adulthood. Many students at different levels of schools are experiencing some type of bullying and we need to put a stop to it. It is affecting the students well being: socially, psychologically, and academically, making the student from preforming at their full potential academically.

The current Gilroy Unified School District policy on bullying does a great job in recognizing the effects and consequences that students will receive if they are the ones perpetrating the bullying. This current policy explains the strategies that school employees should attend to if they see students perpetrating some form of bullying. Overall, the current policy does a great job of recognizing bullying and setting the correct procedures in preventing it.

Without setting specific guidelines on what should be done about bullying, we should, instead start identifying other things in where we can help out school counselors. We need set proposals on what should be done to prevent bullying and bring more awareness to this issue. I therefore submit the following proposal regarding bullying, and how we can slowly bring a complete stop to it.

Respectfully,

Bullying

In today's society it is hard for schools and adults to properly identify and deal with bullying. It is hard to ignore the fact that most bullying goes unnoticed or unreported in schools, a place where adults are constantly present. With the exposure bullying has gotten in recent years people would think that schools have sophisticated methods of dealing with bullying, however this is not the case in most schools. Throughout many schools it can be seen that not enough is done to resolve the bullying and harassment happening on a day to day bases. Many schools work very hard in hopes that one day bullying will end, but it is hard for schools to know what to classify as bullying or harassment, since most of it can start outside of school grounds…

I am sure that we can all, regretfully, think of an incident where you or someone you know have been bullied. Whether it was being called a derogatory name, being singled out because of your race, or even somebody saying something inappropriate about you on facebook. All of these examples are far too familiar in today’s society. So familiar, in fact, that statistics show that one out of every four teens face problems with bullying on a daily basis, whether it is mentally, verbally or physically (Fox,3). Bullying has not only ruined the lives of victims, but also ruined the lives of the bullies themselves. Many people do not understand the negative effects bullying has on oneself and/or their family until they are actually involved in a bullying situation. Bullying is a fact of modern society, however, knowing the psychological and even physical effects that bullying can cause, preventative measures should be taken by parents, teachers and school administrators to abolish bullying for good.…

Imagine that you are a thirteen year crying in your bed because you are dreading facing another day at school because you are being bullied. Nowadays, this is more common than ever before. For far too many teens this is a daily reality. According to the ASPCC (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children) there are over 160,000 students in America who stay home from school every day because they are fearful of the mental and physical abuse from their classmates (1). The ASPCC defines bullying as a direct attack on a child’s status, sense of belonging and core identity and more times than not leads to low self-esteem (2). 1 out of 4 children are bullied every day (3). People hear the word class bully and the majority think of kids fist fighting in the schoolyard, or the mean kid taking lunch money from those they can push around, but this abusive behavior is far more severe than the fist fighting in the schoolyard, or the lunch money being taken from a classmate. This type of behavior has become more aggressive and dangerous than it was twenty years ago. We as adults need to change the perception that bullying at school is a part of life and those victims just need to toughen up. This behavior starts at home; therefore, it must be stopped at home.…
