In the book Soldier’s Heart there is a boy named Charley Goddard. Charley Goddard was only fifthteen. he went into the Civil War but he lied about his age. In the book it says about the Civil War that Charley did not think it was going to be that bad, no one thought it was going to be that bad. In the Civil War they did not have good food. Charley thinks at first that the Civil War is boring. In the Civil War they had to do drills and manual of arms. when they did this they had to work in the hot sun. Before the Civil War they have to be trained, but training was hard. they had to march, wheeling,do drills, and fak loading for training. At first Charley Goddard thought that the Civil War was going to be different. Massey said “ it’ll be all…
The battle of Fort Sumpter was important because it motivated the North to gather an army and begin fighting. It was a big mistake of the South not to allow the Union to bring supplies to the fort. Another important conflict was the ship Alabama, made for the Confederacy by Britain. Then Britain bought two battle ships that the South was building, to avoid starting a war with the North and having them invade Canada. The battle of Bull run is important because it led to the South being overconfident in their victory. The Seven Days Battle was significant because it demonstrated to the North and President Lincoln that total war against the South was necessary.…
Politically, relations between Britain and its American colonies were tense before and after the French and Indian War. Before the war, Canassatego, Chief of the Onondago Nation of the Iroquois Confederacy (Document B), demanded on the removal of the colonist from their land. Therefore, in order to get rid of the tension between the Indians and Britain, the British government passed the Proclamation of 1763, which angered the colonists and expanded westward despite the law. From England, when Benjamin Franklin wrote (Document G), “a firm Loyalty to the Crown and faithful Adherence to the Government of this Nation, …, will always be the wisest Course … to take.”, he meant that being loyal to the crown and following the laws of the government was the best thing that anyone could do in the American colonies. Tension between Britain and the American colonies is shown in Document H, when there is a skull shown on a newspaper masthead and “Adieu Adieu to LIBERTY” down the side.…
The Killer Angels is the book I chose to read for my American Civil War Documentary project. It is a historical novel about real people in history and real events. The story takes place in the small town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania in 1863 during the Civil War. Gettysburg was the site of one of the most significant battles in the American Civil War, and this book describes the three day event in great deal.…
A common influence that caused colonies to strive for unity in the 17th and 18th centuries would be safety and welfare. The pilgrims when arriving at a harbor saw the lack of unity and agreed that all individuals must unite for the general good for the colony (Doc 1). The New England colonies agreed that all colonist must have a firm relationship with each other because it will ensure their mutual safety and welfare (Doc 3) . William Penn agree that meetings and debates must be held for a better understanding of public safety (Doc 4). Other colonist such as Ben Franklin even made a cartoon to convince colonists to…
They believed that the colonies need to stay together when they were fighting the French and the Native-American allies. It was very difficult for the colonies to stay together though because they have different governments and assemblies. The phrase "join or die" did not work out well because the colonies looked at the meaning in different ways, some were positive while some were also negative. So, Benjamin Franklin changed the phrase to "unite or die" which helped the colonies come together to keep Britain under control. Also, Benjamin Franklin knew it would be hard for britain to take over the colonies if they combined together rather than stay apart. So this is why it was important that the colonies stuck…
Columbia represents the Government and the thin man choking is the rebels breaking the rules of the Constitution.…
As early as 1754, the colonial unity was beginning to be discussed by several colonies and individuals. The Pennsylvania Gazette printed a cartoon of the colonies as a snake divided into eight pieces (New England was represented as one piece and Georgia and Rhode Island were not included) along with the imperative statement “Join or Die” (A). This cartoon stressed the importance of colonial unity and urged colonies to unite. In the same year at the Albany Congress, Benjamin Franklin proposed the Albany Plan of Union, which attempted to unite all of the colonies; however, it was not implemented because several colonists as well as the English Parliament refused to agree with the idea. Nevertheless, it was one of the first steps towards colonial unity and it showed that there was thought about a united colonies. The French and Indian War, also known as the Seven Years’ War in Europe, began in 1756 and lasted until 1763. Due to the war, England had amassed a huge debt; to pay off their war expenses the crown began to tax the colonies in America. Parliament passed the Sugar Act in 1764, the Stamp Act in 1765, the Townshend Acts in 1767, the Tea Act in 1773, and Intolerable Acts in 1774 – the final nail. These taxes angered the colonists and the protested “No Taxation without Representation.” In response the Stamp Act, the colonists formed the Stamp Act Congress, a meeting of all but four colonies, in which they wrote and sent a “Declaration of Rights and Grievances” to the King and protested the Stamp Act. The Stamp Act was repealed, but Parliament ignored the…
“America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.” This statement that created by President Abraham Lincoln demonstrates the necessity of the Civil War. If the United States were to remain divided, the strength of these two nations would be degraded and allow the continuation of an immoral practice; slavery. “Politicians, business leaders, newspaper editors, and others desperately sought a last-ditch compromise that would keep other states from following South Carolina...no compromise on Earth could reverse the election of Abraham Lincoln and the Southern fears of a “Black Republican” administration” (Roberts 50). As various groups split within the nation, the…
They were sort of used as propaganda and a way to convey the colonist to unite and create their own sense of identity. In 1750 when the Boston massacre occurred where civilian casualties happened because of miscommunication and taunting/ hostility from the crowd. This incident was depicted by a painting Paul Revere did showing British troops as hostile killers and the Bostonians as civil innocent bystanders being attacked without reason or purpose. Then Mather Byles addressed in “The Famous Mather Byles: The Noted Boston Troy Preacher, Poet and Wit” from 1707 – 1788 that having one tyrant far away or thousands of them close by doesn’t really make a difference but having a better ruler to rule and govern that would be appointed by the nation and follow their own set of laws and regulations and not someone else’s. Then in 1754 Ben Franklin published his famous drawing in the Pennsylvania Gazette showing a snake in multiple piece a representing the colonies and a large caption of “Join or Die” showing that unity is the way to go if to survive and gain a sense of identity by uniting and even strengthening and gain power. Also if you look at it from another point if a snake is cut into pieces it is not technically “united” and really doesn’t have an identity as a snake but if a complete snake is a snake. In 1774, 24 February Richard Henry Lee wrote to…
By the eve of the revolution, significantly between 1750 and 1776, the colonists struggled to develop a sense of identity and unity. Parliament began making laws that the colonists did not agree with. In order for the colonists to live how they wanted, they had to make changes and break away from their Mother Country. Seen in the illustration in Document A, the separate states on the snake show that every state was broken up and on their own. "Join or Die" expressed the overwhelming need of unification between…
On April 6, 1862 Confederate soldiers attacked the Union. Lets look closer into this battle to see what happened. The Union was forced out of their camps. The Confederate Offensive threatened to overwhelm Ulysses S. Grant’s entire command. In the afternoon they established a battle ground. As the battle raged on many were wounded or dead. Weapons helped the Confederates surround the Union troops and capture, kill, or wound most. On April 7th the Confederate forces were weakened. This resulted in Beauregard’s army needing to run and escape the field. Grants counter offensive was successful in pushing the Confederates back. The battle had a large number of troops totaling to a total of 110,053 troops, 65,085 from the Union and 44,968 from…
When the Founding Fathers of America gathered to sign The Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia, their meeting marked the beginning of America’s separation from Britain. Little did they know, the South would recreate such an event 90 years later when it would secede from the Union. This act of secession would spark the Civil War, which claimed “more than half a million lives and a million wounded.” In the 19th century, a majority of the population started to reflect on itself, in particular, its practices and customs. This introspection resulted from demographic pressures caused by technological advancement, unfavorable legislation, modernized thoughts, and incompetent leaders. Such factors contributed to creating varying perspectives…
In the early stages of 1754, colonial unity was beginning to be discussed by several colonies but, as a society they had no motivation. The Pennsylvania Gazette printed a comic of the colonies saying “Join or Die” (A). This cartoon relates to the importance of colonial unity and urged colonies to unite. These events led to the meeting of the Albany congress where Benjamin Franklin proposed the Albany Plan of Union. The plan tried to unite all of the colonies nevertheless, they never came to an agreement in unity but there was progress made. It was one of the first steps towards colonial unity and there was a bit of Unity but they weren’t there yet. Along with several problems the Americans faced, one of the toughest challenges was the Stamp Act. The act created a ton of controversy and problems along with extracting revenue from the Americas. The “Sons of Liberty” are responsible for the Stamp Act of 1765, in addition to the cowardly acts of dumping tea into the Boston channel. In a meeting of 9 colonies, the colonies protested the Stamp Act and the act was abolished. The necessity for unity began to come more important to the colonists whose crisis level continues to rise.…
Benjamin Franklin is known for a variety of things and needless to say he was a man capable of accomplishing multiple things. Thus, including his first political cartoon published in May 9, 1754 in his own newspaper Pennsylvania Gazette. All controlled by himself, Franklin was not only in charge of running it, but also making sure that his points were clear. More so, especially in his “Join, or Die” picture. This broken snake was more than just a simple cartoon. It was a statement for the Americans since it spoke for its self. With the intention for us to fully understand the meaning behind his work of art.…
