POLITICAL DYNASTY
Brand is the "name, term, design, symbol, or any other feature that identifies one seller's good or service as distinct from those of other sellers. The word “brand” is not only present in the field of marketing, but also present in the field of politics. In the Philippines (unfortunately), “brand” is everything. For example, the product brands. To us Filipinos, a refrigerator is a “fridgidare”, toothpaste is a “colgate”, a photocopy is a “Xerox” and a camera is a “Kodak”. While in politics brands exist as well with powerful parties/clans and well known families.
Even his Excellency, “Noynoy” Aquino III can be question or accuse in this so called political dynasty… For me his mother’s death triggered his presidential candidacy.
Compared to Barak Obama and Mitt Romney, who spent a lifetime fighting their way to the top. Both who have equal ambition. This so called “political dynasty” may be one of the reasons why we have such economical problems, and moving slowly towards economical development. The only solution or the only way to compete globally is to choose the best people to do the job. “Government of the people, by the people, to the people-Lincoln. Jerome, we are in a democratic country. It is the people, the masses, who decides, who votes… It is not (us) the politicians to be blame to this so called “political dynasty”; it is them, the people, for they are the one who decides.” –Sofia Zacate (United Nation Youth Ambassador). Thus, it is all up to us. We Filipinos need a wake-up call. I am not against political dynasty, I am against

The United States politics has been considered to be dealt with like another business enterprise in several ways. These are expressions you can hear every day, but what exactly ‘brand’ means? There are many definitions of brand, because brand for everyone means differently. For one it can be a label from expensive designer, or a guarantee of quality, thus it’s a trust in a product or service. For another one the brand can be, for example, Jenifer Lopez’s perfume, because in that person’s eyes, she is a brand, the value and status, that why people are buying this perfume. For example, L. de Chernatory and Dall’ Olmo Riley (1998, p.417) after revising huge amount of articles of brand concept, defined brand as a “multidimensional construct, matching a firm’s functional and emotional values with the performance and psychosocial needs of consumers”. Thus brand is a link, which…

This family run government is not a new thing in the Philippines and it dates all the way back to the US creation of democracy. In the first elections the US organized, to be eligible to run you had to come from a set of elite families recognized by the Americans, called the principalia. This was one of the ways in which the oligarchs had a huge head start and incumbent advantage became the way of life in the Philippines. This has led to very long-run family advantages. For instance, in the province of Leyte, a member of the Veloso family has been either a congress-person or the governor since 1916.…

But well, he stood out during the elections and I had no choice but to respect and accept it for the sake of our country.…

Philippine politics is curious and intriguing, interesting and entertaining—and particularly detestable as well as disgusting. Philippine politics is not simply for the vicious but also for the avaricious, not merely for those wanting to serve but the more so, for those wanting to be served much and well. Philippine politics is the origin of wonderful promises and as well as the cause of big disappointments productive of misery and poverty. Political economy of development emphasizes the role of elites in shaping the economic and political institutions that constitute the fundamental determinants of economic development. According to Acemoglu and Robinson, they emphasized that the way which elite persistence may undermine attempts to reform institutions, leading to “captured democracies” wherein economic institutions and policies disproportionately benefit the elite. Political dynasties, exemplify a particular form of elite persistence in which a single or few family groups monopolize political power. Political dynasties are common in many contemporary democracies such as Argentina, India, Japan, Mexico and the Philippines. The Philippines is a notable example of a dynastic democracy. More than half of elected Philippine congressmen and governors have a relative who has held elected office previously. In 40% of the 79 provinces, the provincial governor and congressman are related. It is the summit of irony…

Ideas are meant not to immortalize history but rather to make sense of it. The manufacture of such ideas is influenced by circumstances that shape it and also, the vital thoughts of their authors. If we are to analyze our history, we could see that ideas are not only important for their interpretation of our history but also for their contribution to changes in our nation. Groundbreaking ideas have moved our nation to change. It is thus valuable for us to recall our own political thinkers. To fully appreciate our nation's existence, it is important for us to trace the evolution of Filipino political thinking.…

Politics. Envisioning Philippines politically 100 years from now, I see disaster. After a century, the Philippine political situation will remain politically immature. Filipino leaders will become only desirous of political control and not because they are interested in the welfare of the mass of the people. Voters will continue to choose not based on who is competent and who is fit in leading the country, but on popular personalities, whether they’re popular actors, actresses, athletes or children of former famous politicians, who are incompetent and does not have a single knowledge of running the country and are only good at convincing people with flowery words. Unworthy politicians will continue to be elected because many Filipinos will vote in exchange for money, not for the progress and prosperity of our country. Political dynasties will continue to prevail and local elites will continue to exert considerable influence in our country. Just like it has always been, presidents in the future will get impeached and senators will be accused of plunder. Corruption in our country will definitely not be lessened. Thus the political and economic situation in the Philippines will continue to be chaotic and mismanaged. However, the country might have a chance to prosper if the government continues to implement reforms, particularly in fighting corruption; if people will stop electing based on popularity, for money, for uncertainty, for probability, for the best promise, and will stop not voting at all. Only then the political situation in the country can get better as a whole.…

Simply because the more family members that are a government official, the more they can corrupt or steal. A perfect example for this is the Binay family. Starting off with our very own Vice President, Jejomor “Jojo” Binay, his daughter Senator Nancy Binay, Makati Rep. Abigail Binay-Campos and Makati City Mayor Jejomar Erwin “Junjun” Binay Jr. As you can see on the news this past few months, they have this 42,157 square meter parcel hacienda which is located at Rosario, Batangas, a resort in Tingloy, Batangas, condominiums and pent houses in Makati. How could they afford to buy and build these establishments? Of course, the money that they used are from the taxes that we pay that should be spent for public establishments and facilities for the advancement and better progress of our country. This is why I disagree with political dynasty. Each one of us is affected by the wrong doings of our government officials but then, we still vote for them because every election they keep on promising things that they really can’t do. Since this country doesn't allot good quality of life to its citizens, those who are in the position are terrified because…

It is a common fact in the country that family members of incumbent politicians run for public office. National and local elections are dominated by these politically empowered families. Up to now, however, the “political dynasties” have not been clearly defined by law in the Philippines. This condition allows and is being used by incumbent politicians to push their family members to pursue political careers. And of course, seeing how these family members observe and experience the prestige, power, and influence of being in politics, they are more inclined to pursue the same career path. This system then leads to an increased and increasing number of family members holding public office creating the undefined “political dynasties.”…

    Ferdinand Marcos

In about two months it will be the elections here in the Philippines. As I ponder about the candidates for president my mind goes back to all the history lectures I had about Ferdinand Marcos and his regime. He held the presidential seat for about twenty-one years and his time in power and even after power has always been controversial. I usually take cabs to get around, and it is common for cabs to have their radio on usually on the news station. Here in the Philippines, it is almost as if politics is the only news. It is what you’ll hear all day. As I sat in a cab one day and listened with the driver about the top presidential candidates Ninoy Aquino and Manny Villar, I started thinking about how either of them would lead this country that is struggling. I asked the driver who he was going to vote for and he said he didn’t know. He said he wished that there was someone like Ferdinand Marcos that he could vote for. Someone who will lead with a clear vision of the country’s direction. When he dropped me home, I researched about the presidency of Ferdinand Marcos. I asked myself how the taxi driver could ask for a person like Ferdinand Marcos while his regime was covered with controversies but then I recalled what my grandfather had told me years ago. He said that during the time of Marcos the Philippine was strong economically and that the country was advancing on an international level. My grandfather also told me though that although the country was strong it still had its flaws such as corruption, embezzlement issues and human rights violations.…
