After declaring their independence, the American people still faced struggles with the British. They traded with both England and France and were harassed by both because of their dislike for each other. Fed up with British harassment, Americans went to war with England for a second time in 1812. During and after the war, America went through changes politically, economically, and culturally. Before and during the war, the dominant political party was the Federalists. After the war, however, Federalist power decreased and a new party, known as the Whig Party, emerged for a short period of time before losing control to the Democrats.
