There are many reasons why America has only two major political parties. It could be the cause of the federal government. The major parties reflect its decentralized structure. Candidates are recruited at the state or local level and are responsive primarily to their own state or local constituencies. At the national level, they consist of local party representatives. This state local orientation affects the policy positions that parties take and the decisions that their elected officials make. What this really means is that we started off with a two party government and people in these parties came into power. Now that they attained the power they do not want to give it away so what the parties do is give their power to people that think just like them which would be other members in their party. On top of that it is so hard for a smaller party with no financial backing to even compete with the two monstrous parties.…
I think the two-party system does prevent a national spirit of optimism and cooperation. This is because if there are two parties, there are likely two opposing views, evident in the two parties we have in America today. Many times, Republicans won’t vote for a bill the Democratic party proposes solely based on the fact that their opposing party proposed it. Members of the House and Senate…
Politics is a whole other world that revolves around laws, elections, and strategy. A world full of disagreements, debates, strategizing and bringing down an opponent. Political Parties involve presidential elections, debates, campaigns, money, planning and effort. All the news about Donald Trump holding a lead in Caucuses, Sander’s edge shrinks, close fights between Sanders and Clinton etc. Those are all the fights in between the political parties to decide who is going to represent each party to run for president. All of the campaigns, debates, and votes for president started with the argumentative Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton.…
Partisan politics play a positive role in shaping America because they create political parties, which makes collective action and policy-making easier, and places some control over politicians with large ambitions. First of all, partisan politics lead to the facilitation of collective action. To facilitate collective action, in this case, means that partisan politics make it easier for voters to form groups that will vote in a certain way. This means that Americans who see the benefits of either the Democratic or Republican party will vote for that one; for instance, if you are a businessman, you know that supporting the Republican party will benefit you, which means that most businessmen are probably Republican. In addition to the facilitation of collective action, partisan politics make policy-making easier.…
As George Washington retired from his presidential position in 1796, he left a grim reminder to the people of the newly independent United States of America: the independence of states, peace at home and abroad, safety, prosperity, and liberty are all dependent upon the unity between states. To promote the national strength, he urges the people to place their identity as Americans above those of their state, region, and interests. In fear of the impeding sectionalism, Washington included a fair warning to the people of the United States, the dangers of political parties to the government and the country as a whole. The idea of political parties, although warned thoroughly by our very first president, continuously solidified itself into the core of American government until it has become two standing pillars of modern politics: the Democratic Mules and its counterpart, the Republican Elephants. In 21st century politics, these two reigning parties, both having changed and altered their focus over time, have maintained a core value system, ideas beliefs, and key constituencies, which are made apparent throughout political campaigns; no better evidence than the 2012 political party platforms articulates the political position which each party represents.…
Hamilton and Jefferson had conflicting ideas on almost every issue, from how to interpret the Constitution, to who should lead the United States. As Hamilton and Jefferson gathered supporters, they both established parties. Hamilton created the Federalist Party ( the modern day equivalent to the Democratic Party). Federalists liked big national government; as opposed to Jefferson's Republican Party, which liked small national government to give more power to states. In the past, Republicans and Democrats have worked together and compromised on issues involving the country. However, recently, compromise is not being reached between the two parties. This has naturally created a divide in our country, which has only been amplified in recent presidential elections. In the words of former U.S ambassador Antonio Garza, "We've allowed ourselves to slide into the politics of anger and fear, of a group of name-calling, where the others – be they immigrants, bankers or supporters of the other candidate – are stupid, crazy, or corrupt. We've forgotten that these nameless individuals are often our neighbors, doctors, teachers, friends and family members" (Garza, 2). As illustrated by the quote, the supporters of both parties and the parties themselves are not working together. Instead, Republicans are too focused on stopping the Democratic party, and Democrats are too focused on stopping the Republican…

In present-day times, the American political system is most frequently associated with the ongoing issues between political parties. Two major political parties that formed during the 1790s were The Democratic-Republicans (Anti Federalist party) led by Thomas Jefferson, and the Federalists, led by Alexander Hamilton. But several years ago these political parties did not exist and many of the leaders were pleased they didn’t. George Washington warned America’s people of the dangers of these separate parties in “The Farewell Address” an excerpt as shown in Document 4. He believed that political parties would divide our country and kindle animosity. Even though many tried to oppose them, political parties still began to rise. What lead to the rise of these political parties was the different views on the government, how to interpret the Constitution.…
The claim that political parties are in decline first arose in the United States in the late 1960s and 70s. There are several factors unique to the situation of American political parties that emphasise he case for party decline. In particular, the vast scale of party operations across the 52 states, the method used for candidate selection and the vast amounts of money used along the campaign. This essay will discuss whether the theory of party is outdated or not.…
Because of this, parties naturally form. In the United States, the formation can be traced to before The Constitution and the dispute over strong versus weak government, and continued to develop through the early years of the new government. Once the Constitution was established debates arose on several fronts. Whether it was through financial planning, distribution of power, or potentially unlawful treaties, tensions between the ideals of the two groups were enflamed. Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson were often so polarized that coming to compromises could be difficult, much to the chagrin of others, including Washington. However, they cannot be completely credited with forming the two-party system. Other politicians contributed, and at times the division was just the natural product of the circumstance. Also, they are not entirely the reason the system has persevered over time. Instead, the nature of elections in the United States have caused the two-party system to be maintained. All this being said, whether Hamilton and Jefferson are entirely to blame, they also proved that dissension is not always bad. It allows for different ideas to be heard and compromises to be made. Through their disagreements they produced innovation that has shaped the nation. This party system, though it has shifted and swapped over the years, still stands. The effects of these men run so deep that…
People in society today have influences throughout their life that help structure and dictate their thoughts. Choices are made based on these influences, and when these influences begin to take shape as different labels, no real choices are made. People begin to compromise their right to think on their own and instead turn to the most convenient choice. This is how a great deal of society has acts today, choosing the easiest path just so that person can get a given task out of the way and continue on with their life. These influences are frequently seen in politics today. People become so wrapped up in political parties that they become more interested in who is running in which party, instead of which candidate, at any level of government, has the stances that the voter agrees with the most. According to “The Loss of the Creature” and “Ways of Seeing”, multiple aspects of having the labels the political parties have inhibit voters from making sovereign decisions. When a candidate is running for an office, they should not have a political party label attached to them because that label can inhibit voters from choosing a candidate who they think will best serve the position to better the region they are running for.…
To this day, in our election, we have political parties. Political parties are a group of like-minded people, working together to try and win their election. Not all people would say that political parties are important, but I disagree. Some people would agree with me because without them then our elections would be very hard to keep track of. They would be difficult to track because then it would be everyone for themselves so they can’t group the votes. Most people don’t really say much much about political parties but when they do they usually ask. “Why did political parties develop?” and “Did political parties have any problems?”. These questions could easily be answered with some research.…
Regarding the controversy of political parties, Martin Van Buren argued, “Political parties are inseparable from free governments and are highly useful to the country… Doubtless excesses frequently attend them and produce many evils, but not so many as are prevented by the maintenance of the organization and vigilance.” Van Buren repudiated the traditional belief that political parties were antirepublican, advocating that they would create organization in society. The return of the two party system in the United States during the early to mid-1800s was due greatly to important political figures and the economic conflicts of the time.…
In the early days of America, politics wasn’t very publicized. Before television “A debate on Capitol Hill back then might or might not have made the news, but even if it did, days could go by before the rest of the country reacted.” (How Politics Has Changed). With the inventions of the radio and television, people were able to immediately hear results from political debates and votes of Congress on the legislature. This change meant people became more knowledgeable about politics, and this caused increased involvement in politics throughout the country. This could be seen as a positive or negative change, but increased involvement of the people in the government is a change nonetheless. The political parties aren’t what they used to be, either. The ones we have today are not even the ones America originally had. The first two parties were called Federalists and Jeffersonians, or Republicans. Federalists were conservative, mostly elite, and a nationalistic government, while the Jeffersonians opposed the national bank, committed to the rights of states, and were “Anti-Administration” (The First Political Parties). Today the two main parties are Republican and Democrat. Republicans when they were first formed, weren’t conservative compared to today's Republican party and that is definitely an important change it…
Some may think that a two party system is not fair, but if there were more than two major parties, people would start to get confused about who said what and to whom. And, as we all know, when people have a decision with too many options to choose from, they simply decide to not choose at all resulting in not voting also known as decreased voter turnout, which would not help America's political system. Decreased voter turnout means that not everyone chose to vote even though they could and a higher number of people voted the year before.…
