INTRODUCTION

Amul is an Indian dairy cooperative, based at Anand in the state of Gujarat, India. The word Amul is derived from the Sanskrit word Amulya, meaning invaluable.
The co-operative is sometimes referred to as Anand Milk Union Limited. Formed in 1946, it is a brand managed by a cooperative body, the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd. (GCMMF), which today is jointly owned by 3 million milk producers in Gujarat.
The GCMMF is the largest food products marketing organization of India. It is the apex organization of the dairy cooperatives of Gujarat.
AMUL is also the largest exporter of dairy products in the country. AMUL is available today in over 40 countries of the world.
AMUL is exporting a wide variety of products which include whole and skimmed milk powder, cottage cheese (Paneer), UHT milk, clarified butter (Ghee) and indigenous sweets,etc.
Dr Verghese Kurien founder-chairman of the GCMMF for more than 30 years (1973–2006), is credited with the success of Amul

P – Political
Amul is readying for another boardroom battle. The revolt this time is against Chairman Vipul Chaudhary. According to various news reports, the board of the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd
Amul will take up a no-confidence motion against Chaudhary, who has been charged with financial irregularities. “Chaudhary is not capable of chairing GCMMF and he has lost our confidence,” Jethabhai Patel of Sabarkantha district union has been quoted as saying in a report.
A report in the Business Standard says 14 of the 17 board members are pitching for a no-confidence motion against the chairman.
It has been alleged that the Mehsana union has the highest level of debt at about Rs 1,300 crore and its milk production, which stood at about 16 lakh liters last year, is also declining steadily
Amul has about 31 lakh farmers as members. Including their family members, this translates into about 1 crore votes, almost one-third of Gujarat’s total voters.
The boardroom battles are also a reflection of getting to influence these voters through adjusting the milk prices, says the ET report.
Chaudhary himself has shifted his allegiance a couple of times between the Congress and BJP.
According to the BS report, he was part of Shankar Singh Vaghela’s coup on then BJP government in Gujarat in 1996-97.
Later, along with the RJP, he joined the Congress. Then in 2007, he came back to the BJP and was seen as a favorite of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, says the BS report. Now, he may be again shifting to the Congress camp.
According to the report, Chaudhary was seen accompanying Rahul Gandhi during his recent visit to Ahmadabad. This is the real reason behind the revolt against Chaudhary, says the report.

Interestingly, Chaudhary was a hardcore Modi man and was also engaged in his election campaigns. In India, political interference in co-operatives is nothing new. Most of the co-operatives in the country are controlled by political parties who use these bodies to meet their political ends.
But Amul was different, at least until 2004, when Kurien fell out with Modi. At a public function Kurien, who was known for his outspokenness, criticized rampant corruption in the government which did not go down well with Modi, says an earlier ET report.
The Gujarat government then started interfering in the affairs of GCMMF and even resulted in Kurien’s ouster. Also, the constitution of the federation, which had a unique model that insulated it from political interference, was challenged by BJP-affiliated members of the federation.
For the BJP, the federation became a vote-generating machine. Eyeing farmers’ votes, it pulled the strings to raise milk prices several times, says the ET report. With the BJP gaining control, the GCMMF is now more of a political body rather than a company doing business.
Interestingly, this is happening under the chief minister ship of Modi, who projects himself as the most business friendly politician in the country. With Rahul also coming into the picture now, political interference in the federation is complete.
If Modi and Rahul are indeed business friendly, they should keep off Amul and let it do business in its own way. Otherwise, one the most respected Indian brands and business models may not survive long.

E- Economy

At the beginning of the 20th century, Mahatma Gandhi had stated “The soul of India lives in its villages”. 100 years later, as our national GDP surges ahead at the rate of 8.6% towards the US$ 2 Trillion mark, this statement still stands true.
With 70% of our citizens still residing in rural India, agriculture remains the backbone of Indian economy, providing livelihood to almost two thirds of the workforce in our country.
The importance of agriculture to our nation is best summed up by this statement: “If agriculture survives, India survives”.
While agricultural sector is critical to our national food security, it is also intrinsically linked to our rural society and culture and therefore progress in this sector directly benefits rural society, environment and quality of life.
They will continue to play our leadership role in Indian dairy industry and also lead the Indian dairy cooperative sector to a position of eminence in our national economy.
They have already finalized and documented our roadmap for the next ten years.
As per their plan, the group turnover of all dairy cooperatives of Gujarat will reach Rs. 30,000 crores (US$ 6.7 Billion assuming current prices and exchange rate) by the year 2020

S – Social AMUL is a three tier co-operative organization.
The first tier is the co-operative society at the village, of which; milk producers are voluntary members, managing the co-operative through a democratically elected 9-member managing committee, and doing business by purchasing milk from members and selling it to the district level co-operative.
There are more than 11,000 co-operatives in villages of Gujarat. The second tier is the district co-operative that processes milk into milk products, markets locally and sells surplus to the state co-operative for national and international marketing.
There are 12 district co-operatives each being managed by a 15-member board elected by the college comprising the nominated representatives or chairmen of the village co-operatives.
Amul initiated as an experiment in two villages, collecting 250 kg of milk per day. As the cooperative expanded its branches over the course of its 50-year journey, Amul boasts of more than six million kilograms of milk collection daily.
The Amul Model narrowed the gap between the producer and the consumer, connecting the dairy farmer to the consumer through its organic network.
The success of this model ignited interest across India, where this model was replicated, in essence leading to the White Revolution.
The case provides sufficient insights and learning’s to develop a framework to comprehend the basic essence of a prosperous social enterprise — factors that make it successful. Dairy Equipment

Angular Strainer
