One program is the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA. This program, that President Obama sought to expand, protects residence that are before the age of sixteen from being deported for two years (Greenblatt). An other programs that was enacted to protect immigrants was the Dreamers program. This programs was a great thing from immigrants because it, “This so-called Dreamers program had already provided nearly 640,000 undocumented youths with legal protection since its inception. As many as 270,000 others could have been eligible under Obama’s new criteria, which eliminated the maximum age at which people could apply” (Greenblatt). These programs like the Dreamers program and the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals are great programs that protect and benefit immigrants, but imagine what would happen if politicians were able to grant them citizenship. That would allow, “ About 4.4 million people were expected to be eligible to apply for legal status that would defer deportation and allow them to work legally. They would have to pass background checks and pay taxes and would receive Social Security cards” (Greenblatt). The politicians that support this side are the Republicans. Some of the Republicans are mixed on the issues, but the Grand Old Party wants the borders and laws toughened (Greenblatt). The Republicans have had many setbacks though. They have tried to make change on immigration, “ “However, a federal judge placed those changes on hold until a lawsuit challenging the executive action, filed by 26 states, is adjudicated. That case is still pending, but Republicans remain irate over what they view as Obama’s ‘executive amnesty’” (Greenblatt). The Republicans are very frustrated with what Obama is doing for immigrants. They believe that he is overstepping his boundaries. Republicans have been blocking every proposal that Obama has had on immigration, because they believe that he is reaching far beyond his authority as the President of the United States (Greenblatt). They also block these proposals because the Republicans believe that the borders will become leaky, allowing terrorists and undocumented immigrants to flow into America (Greenblatt). That these undocumented immigrants will take jobs away from Americans and suppress wages (Greenblatt). They have made many effort to stop Obama, like when Congressional Republicans tried to block Obama through legislation this year (Greenblatt).
