Polley's Speech Analysis
I attended a speech by Dr. Eric Polley about his effort to create a computer algorithm program to match the type of cancer based on biomarkers to the optimal treatment. Even though some of the information went way over my head I did understand most of his speech. Today there are so many drugs that have been developed to help people battle cancer, but each drug only works with specific types of cancer. There are also countless types of cancer with each tumor being different from the rest. His goal was to create a way to match patients with the correct drug to increase their survival. His hope was that he could create a computer program that would pick the optimal treatment more often than a doctor just picking a treatment based on the tissue

This image is of Henry’s Saint Crispin’s day speech with Henry standing above his soldiers who are gathered around him in their war attire with swords and other weapons listening attentively to his words encouragement. These excerpts are significant to the play’s characters because without this speech there is no telling how Henry’s soldiers would have done in battle or what the outcome of the Battle of Agincourt would have been. These quotations demonstrate Henry’s ability to persuade others and what he is like as a leader. Before his Saint Crispin’s day speech, the soldiers were worried about going into battle and were quite afraid, but through his compelling diction Henry succeeded in raising the morale of his soldiers therefore boosting…

The Seneca orator known as Red Jacket, for the red jacket the British Awarded to him for his services as a message runner during the Revolutionary War and Benjamin Franklin both made very valid point in their speeches. The Indians had a very peaceful way of life. Alexandra Cousteau is a filmmaker that works with National Geographic. She is recognized for being an advocate of water issues and continuing her grandfather’s work. The speech was held at WSRE Jean and Paul Amos Performance Studio and was sponsored by WSRE Public Square Speakers Series. The stage had a red rectangle in the middle and a podium off to the right with a big screen in the background. The general purpose of the speech was to give her background and also bring up some of the issues that are plaguing our water systems today. The speaker’s specific purpose was to inform but hopefully persuade people to take action.…

Have you ever been challenged by an experience? Have you ever changed because of this experience? Good morning to the representives of the Board of studies,.... and I wish to justify why the texts I have studied should be kept on the reading list of this module “Into the World”. “The Story of Tom Brennan” by J.C Burke and the feature article of “Sliver Linings” found in the of Sydney Morning Herald’s “The Good Weekend” both emphasise the idea that people are able to come out of difficult situations and see the world from a new perspective.…

Jim Valvano, better known as Jimmy V, was a men’s basketball coach in the NCAA for many years and is remembered most for coaching his North Carolina State Wolf pack squad to the 1983 national championship over the Juggernaut University of Houston team. That team established the term “Cinderella” as no one ever expected them to win the way that they won. Jim Valvano received some horrible news in the middle of 1992. His doctors told him that he had terminal cancer. Several months later, he received the Arthur Ashe Courage award at the 1993 ESPY Awards presented by ESPN. The Presidential Election of 1986 between the Republican William McKinley and Democrat William Jennings Bryan, is thought to be one of the most impressive and complicated presidential elections in all of American History. One of the major highlights of the election was William Jennings Bryan’s “Cross of Gold” speech that sparked the people’s interest for the Democratic representative. This speech not only had a firm and well defined meaning, but its delivery was also delivered superbly. The speech itself was concerned with many problems, such as growing class divisions that later were the cause of many violent outbursts among the people. Money was the most prominent concern for the people in 1896 because of high employment rates and the fact that they were recovering from a few years of depression. The…

Santiago de Chile is a speech presented from Salvador Allende to Chilean workers in Chile Coup D’état, 1973. The intended audience of the speech was Chileans who suffered in the coup d’état. Throughout the speech, Allende addressed “workers of my country”, “modest women”, and “professionals” to defend the democracy from tyranny. The purpose of the speech is encouraging Chileans to make a sound judgement in fighting against the totalitarianism army force, while defending capitalism to thrive for peace and justice. This is because throughout the speech, Allende uses phrases like “I have faith in Chile and its destiny”, “I will always be next to you”, and “long live Chile! Long live the people! Long live the workers!” as an encouragement for…

Debra Wuichet is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker from University of Tennessee. She is the Director of Social Services at North Mississippi State Hospital and has been working there for sixteen years. Her topic of the presentation was mental illnesses and schizophrenia. I really enjoyed her speech because I had little previous knowledge of mental illness. Even though I have taken a few classes that discussed the illnesses, I can understand better with stories or a way to imagine a situation and Debra provided that. Information that I thought I knew, was stuff I had assumed from watching television shows and movies. Most of that information is inaccurate.…

Mr. Hrabowski began his keynote speech by telling the audience about when he was a young boy and his parents insisted that he go to a church service where a guest pastor was speaking. This guest pastor emphasized the need for the children to participate in a peaceful protest going on, proclaiming, “If the children participate in this peaceful march, America will know even our babies know the difference between right and wrong” (M. King). It was soon revealed that this guest pastor was Martin Luther King Jr. himself. From there Mr. Hrabowski described his experience in the march, his realization that he was not in fact a second hand citizen and that he could do anything he put his mind to. This realization put the strength of change behind him and he pursued his education. Personally, I took away from the speech that he felt that education was the key behind change. In parting words, he left the audience, especially the students, with these words: “Learn to ask questions… learn to listen… and learn to act” (F. Hrabowski).…

Johnson uses several key elements of a great speech to target his audience. One of the key elements he uses are powerful metaphors and paints vivid imagery. In the speech at the University of Michigan, Johnson says several metaphors and vivid imagery. One of the first is “I have come today from the turmoil of your capital to the tranquility of you campus to speak about the future of your country.” He is making a comparison to the nation's capital to the university campus and connecting to the audience. He goes on to say, The Great Society rests on abundance and liberty for all. This gives the Great Society a physical feature that can be felt, seen, and weighed. He is describing a solid foundation, which most believe is important for all things…
