Answer = Acid mine drainage (AMD) is one of the more serious environmental problems in the mining industry. AMD is the major pollutant of surface waters in the Mid-Atlantic Region of the United States (US EPA, 2006). The formation of AMD is a very complex chemical and microbial process, and usually occurs where deep excavations, such as those associated with coal mining, expose unweathered pyritic materials. Water contaminated by AMD on permitted sites where…
Lead mining of Phoenixville and Chester Counties began about 1808. In 1850, the first discovery of mining in the district started, and the discovery of ore was approximately along the Mine Run about one-half mile northwest of present Audubon village. Similarly, zinc utilized derived from a mixture located about the Perkiomen and Franklin Furnace in N.J. This mining activity in the district can be deduce that the alloy of zinc ore mining process lead to the modern discovery of copper and other essential minerals that constitute the Phoenixville…

The care with which the explanation phase of the mine has been conducted is extra ordinary. There is virtually no trace of where the first core samples were drilled. The dreaded “trailing’s pond” is just a containment area where discarded rock is stored after the ore has been removed. It’s covered with a shallow layer of water to prevent acidification. I believe that the mine and the fishery can coexist.…
The yield of a metal from a particular mineral or ore is the mass of metal that can be obtained from a particular mass of the mineral or ore, and is often expressed as a percentage. It is possible to use formulae to calculate/predict yields of metals from particular minerals (pure compounds), for ores we have to measure them experimentally. This is because ores are mixtures of the required mineral and unwanted material, and, being mixtures, they have variable composition.…

An effusive eruption occurs when the magma feeding the volcano is hot and mafic causing it to have low viscosity. An explosive eruption occurs when pressure builds in a volcano. It may be a small explosion like a basaltic eruption where the gas builds up and suddenly escapes or it can be a large explosion which can be triggered by many things, such as cracks in the flank of an island volcano where water enters the magma chamber and turns to steam, or if a very viscous magma plugs the vent and the pressure increases so much it cracks parts of the volcano and…
Kouros represents youth, moral and physical beauty of the aristocratic culture of Archaic Greece. On the other hand, Aphrodite represents the Greek goddess of love and beauty. Kouros is a life-sized sculpture and hands clenched at the sides and one foot slightly forward. In contrast, Aphrodite is given larger than real-life scale.…
Illinois was divided into five inspection districts and a Board of Examiners for Mine Inspectors was created in 1883. This State Mining Board as it was later called supervised inspections of Illinois mines. Illinois created the Department of Mines and Minerals in 1917 to take over the mining regulatory duties of its precursor, the State Mining Board. Centralia No. 5 was one of five inspections districts in Illinois. It once provided coal during World War II. On March 25, 1947, the mine exploded. According to the investigative findings of the U.S. Bureau of Mines and Mine Safety and Health Administration, a build-up of charge ignited coal dust caused the explosion (Martin, 2000). A brief chronology of events leading up to the mine disaster is necessary to understand where Illinois public administration officials failed.…

Historically, mining has been a crucial part of the UP economy. Without mining, today's economy would look very different in the areas of education, healthcare, etc. The land and climate are not very suitable for agriculture because of the long harsh winters. So when the UP had its first settlers, they most likely relied on logging, mining, and tourism (because of the beautiful beaches and terrain) for survival and eventually, to build capital and use the Upper Peninsula’s many break-in-transport’s as a spot for trading. Early settlers likely had to rely heavily on trade to get food/agriculture that they could not grow like wheat. So without mining, early settlers might not have had enough natural resources to provide sustainable living. Mining has shaped and affected the UP economy both directly and indirectly. Mining brings employment, government revenues, and opportunities for economic growth. Mining produces minerals that people put a high value on, and like #9 on the ‘Twelve Key Elements of Economics’, producing goods and services that people value, not just jobs, provides the source of high living standards here in the UP. Living standards cannot increase without an increase in the availability of goods and services that people value. The UP might see an increase in the amount of mining in the immediate future because of a severance tax policy just signed a month ago by Governor Snyder that is going to help new mining operations as the bill says that they will no longer pay taxes until they start extracting minerals. Also, the new law places a tax of 2.75% on minerals like copper and nickel that will be collected by local units of government with 65% of the revenue for counties, townships, and school districts. 35% will go to rural development to support long-term economic development. So to this day, there is evidence that mining always has been and still is improving our…
The specific type of mining that occurred in this area, strip mining, lead to deforestation because whole mountains needed to be blasted away. This change in landscape led to a severe loss of natural habitats and bio-diversity. The loss of natural habitat is starting to destroy the community around Marsh Fork. In fact, deforestation was a, or perhaps the, major factor in the collapse of past societies. (Ritzer & Dean, 2015) Nearly 500 mountains and 1,200 miles of streams were lost because of the coal mining (Wood & Cavanough, 2010). Massey Corporation could destroy many natural streams thanks to an environmental “points” system through the EPA. For every stream that was destroyed, they had to help rebuild and repair other streams in the area to offset their destructive acts. This was very like the carbon tax cap and trade that was discussed in…
The Victor Diamond Mine near James Bay in Northern Ontario rose lots of controversy over the environmental, economic, and social issues created by the mine. While the company that owns the mine, De Beers, says that the new mine will bring Canada new revenue and will boost the economy, the people of the Attawapiskat First Nation are in discontent over the failing water quality in regions around the mine. These First nations are extremely unhappy with the way the Victor Diamond Mine deals with its waste, which causes an increase in mercury levels in the Attawapiskat River.…
The stakeholder’s moral failings come only thinking of the revenue that mining would bring and not the effect on the environment. The beauty of the Green Valley will change with industrial growth. The involvement of politics may play a role since the land is public and owned by the government. Bureau of land Management is in charge of issuing permits for drilling, and some people think that they are catering to particular political groups.…
Answer = Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) is a growing concern in mining operations today. Research associates AMD with new construction, mining, and quarry activities (Akcil & Koldas, 2006). This is a real concern today due to the increase in coal mining and quarry activities associated with energy exploration. For example, clean coal technology has increased…
