Chapter - 2
(Polynomials)
Key Concepts
Constants : A symbol having a fixed numerical value is called a constant.
Example : 7, 3, -2, 3/7, etc. are all constants.
Variables : A symbol which may be assigned different numerical values is known as variable. Example :

C - circumference of circle r - radius of circle

Where 2 &

are constants. while C and r are variable

Algebraic expressions : A combination of constants and variables. Connected by some or all of the operations +, -, X and
Example :

is known as algebraic expression.

etc.

Terms : The several parts of an algebraic expression separated by '+' or '-' operations are called the terms of the expression.
Example :

is an algebraic expression containing 5

terms
Polynomials : An algebraic expression in which the variables involved have only nonnegative integral powers is called a polynomial.

(ii)

is a polynomial in variable x. is an expression but not a polynomial.

Polynomials are denoted by
Coefficients : In the polynomial

, coefficient of

respectively and we also say that +1 is the constant term in it.
Degree of a polynomial in one variable : In case of a polynomial in one variable the highest power of the variable is called the degree of the polynomial.
Classification of polynomials on the basis of degree.

An equation is a number sentence that says that the expressions on either side of the equals sign represent the same number. An expression may be used to designate a value; these can be variables, operations, and or functions. Using algebraic expression, there is no equal sign, only operations. You can simplify an expression not solve it.…

I would explain that when multiplying polynomial is when all the variables have integer exponents that are positive. This works with addition, subtraction and multiplication. It has to be possible to write the equation without division for it to be a polynomial. This is an example of what a polynomial looks like: 4xy2+3X-5. To multiply two polynomials, you must multiply each term in one polynomial by each term in the other polynomial, and then add the two answers together. After you get your answer, simplify to the smallest term if it is needed.…

Another concept that could be used in an accounting profession is combining like terms. Like terms are terms that have identical variables and exponents. Like terms must have exactly the same letter parts. Using like terms may not be exactly the same in accounting as in algebra, but it is the same concept. You can only add things to the same accounts; you cannot add a cash total balance to an insurance expense account. An example of combining like terms in accounting is having $600 spent on rent, $350 spent on supplies, $75 spent on insurance expenses, and $123 spent on supplies. You cannot add all of the numbers together they are different accounts the only two that can be combine are the two supplies expenses. $350+$123=$473 on supplies.…
