“The health benefits of red wine have come to light in recent years. Hope is on the horizon, and it may be in your glass!” Despite a seemingly indulgent high saturated fat diet, the French have a substantially lower death rate from coronary disease than any other major country. This phenomenon had been named the French Paradox and it is suggested that their consumption red wine may account for this strange occurrence (Mark Gould, 12/03/2006). In recent years, there has been substantial research into the health benefits associated with red wine and it has been found that it contains antioxidant and cancer preventing substances. These substances are the focal point of the above statement, and have …show more content…

The polyphenol Resveratrol has been discovered as a ground breaking possibility for the future, and it is found in the skin of red grapes (Anon., 2012). Its discovery has led to possible cures for cardiovascular diseases and various cancer related tumors. A more recently discovery is its anti-aging properties.
Atherosclerosis is the hardening of arteries, and is quite a common disease which can lead to the fatal effects of cardiovascular diseases (CVD’s). Resveratrol acts in a few ways to inhibit the progression of atherosclerosis by countering the effects vasoconstrictor ET-1 (constriction of blood vessels) which leads to developing the production of nitric oxide, a compound shown to reverse the inflammation and hardening process by relaxing blood vessels and thinning the blood, and also preventing Low density lipoprotein (bad cholesterol) from oxidizing. These effects aid to prevent blood clots (Sahelian, 2014). Inflammation adds to the stress of CVD’s and the enzyme cyclooxygenase …show more content…
Overall red wine is a substance that has been in our society and culture for many years and in that time the wine making process has been refined. Biomedical science has shown that the contents of red wine could lead to further discoveries that enhance our everyday lives in quite dramatic way, but red wine itself is a proven source of nutrients that is considered very helpful in the average adult diet in moderate amounts. Studies regarding the overall effectiveness of this beverage have been carried out in in vitro (purely chemically or in test tubes), in vivo (tests conducted on animals) and human tests, where positive results in humans have been proven consistently. Supplements derived from red wine
(for example resveratrol) have been used to attempt specifically effecting cancers and CVD’s but still further human studies for long and short term use to prove their overall effectiveness is needed.
Tests conducted on alcohol showed that the overall antioxidant compounds are increased and make a difference in the body at moderate consumption within a space of two weeks.
