Chapter 2- In chapter two, Johnny is with Dally and Ponyboy to the drive in movies. But in this chapter, Johnny character I developing and kind of cluing into the next chapters. Dally is harassing a Socs named Cherry and Johnny
stood up for her and told Dally to stop. Dally stops and it sort of is a confidence booster for Johnny. After Dally leaves, Cheery invites the boys to sit with her and her friend. Johnny was able to talk to the girls and ask them questions. Once Two-Bit came and was joking around, Johnny again told Two-Bit why the girls invited them up.
Chapter 3- After the movie was over, Johnny, Ponyboy, Two-bit, Cherry, and Marcia went to go to Two-Bit’s house to go drive the girls home. As they were walking, some Cherry and Marcia’s boyfriends in a blue Mustang spotted them walking. Johnny instantly grabbed his switch blade. Ponyboy knew he would use it if the time came. Johnny was ready for a fight, and he wouldn’t let those Socs beat him up like they did before.
Chapter 4- Johnny and Pony ran to the park after Darry had slapped Pony. It’s 2:30 am and here comes the Blue Mustang earlier from that night. Looking for a fight, The Socs grabbed Pony and they dunked him in and out of the pool. Although the Socs did not directly harm Johnny, they were about to kill a friend who he cared about. It came to be that time when Johnny had to use the stich blade. Johnny was sick of the way the Socs treated him, and to treat his friend like that was kind of a personal attack on him. Johnny finally snapped, and stabbed Bob. This is an important part in Johnny’ Development because he finally took charge of the situation. No longer is he willing to sit on the sidelines. Johnny goes to Dally for help of how to get out of town with Ponyboy. After Johnny killed Bob, he has become his own person and is not as reliant on the gang as he was before. After much consideration, Johnny has decided to turn himself in. The decision to turn himself is key in his development. It shows that he has matured and that he is independently thinking. Dally tells him not to turn himself in, but Johnny insists on doing it. This is suspiring because Johnny looks up to Dally and sees him as a role model because they have similar family situations.
As they were driving to go turn Johnny in, they went to the church and it was on fire. They heard children screaming from inside the church. Despite Dally telling them not to go, Johnny and Pony went to go save them anyway. When Johnny runs into the church, that another key development. Now Johnny is a new person compared to the beginning of the book. Not only is he thinking independently, he is also risking his own life for people he doesn't even know. Johnny’s life was cut short, when he died at the hospital after being seriously injured from saving the children. I think that if Johnny had more time on Earth, his character could of have developed more into a mature and definitive person.
