Ponyboy's The Outsiders
In The Outsiders Ponyboy recites a poem on page 77. I believe that the meaning of this poem is that not everything is meant to last. In this poem, he talks about how the dawn becomes day, leafs turn into flowers, and how Eden sank to grief. All of these examples show how things can change. The time of change changes all time, as well as the seasons and more. This poem is saying that nothing in nature is meant to be the same all the time. Plants in nature grow old and slowly wither away, as time goes on. People also can change their appearance and how they act towards specific people. They may avoid them or change their thoughts about them. Firstly, Ponyboy would recite this poem on page 77 because he wants to transmit a message to the reader
and to Johnny. He is trying to say that people change and they don’t stay the same forever. Characters like him and Johnny have changed from the beginning of The Outsiders until now. In the beginning of the story, Johnny was very quiet and scared of the slightest noise around him, but now he is facing his fears and is being the leader instead of the pet of the group. Ponyboy was also quiet and never used common sense when needed to, but now Ponyboy is learning that he needs to use his head in order to survive in reality and not be killed. Both of these characters have experience change within the past 5 chapters and relate to the theme of the novel. Secondly, this poem is related to the theme of this novel because it shows that change be a good thing and without change, you can’t survive. When Ponyboy’s parents died, Darry had to change who he was to be more like a parent to protect Sodapop and Ponyboy. When Johnny killed the Soc,he had to change how he behaved so he,or Ponyboy,wouldn’t get caught by the authorities. These characters relate to the poem because it says “Nothing gold can stay” which is like how Johnny wouldn’t be able to kill something accidentally, according to Ponyboy, but he changed when Ponyboy’s life was threatened so Ponyboy could live, by killing a Soc.
