You see your classmates arriving with their new and shiny cars, bought with their parents’ credit cards and you feel a pang of envy. You think, why can they have a car and why cannot I? You even considered saving money to buy a car. Then, you think again. In your head you say, why do I even want to have a car? The answer is, pop culture causes teens to want to have a car.
Teens nowadays are thrilled with the idea of having their own car. At some point in every teenager’s life, he/she thought about it. (Goode, 2008). It may be because he/she saw it on television or saw it on a neighbor’s garage. You may have even seen a car show of different sports cars and felt the urge to buy one. Regardless of how you saw it, you know
that you want to drive a car of your own.
However, at this point in their lives, some teens still do not possess responsibility needed in owning a car. They see owning cars and its prestige but not its risks. Most are not experienced enough to know what to do if their car breaks down on the road or worse, if they performed something against the traffic violations. Teens are so excited about having a car that sometimes, it is all they can think of and not its consequences.
Driving a car in your teens results in accidents because they are not yet aware of how they should behave on the road. Some just want to show off their cars and do not read traffic signs causing mishaps on highways. Most of drivers who experienced accidents are teens or were in their teens.
Teenagers are still adjusting to the transition from childhood to adulthood. They behave like children sometimes and this is what causes their irrational behavior that are even brought to driving. From thirteen to nineteen, every trend that comes out should be followed. This is also applicable to driving. They may have different reasons but the number one cause is pop culture. Even though they are not ready enough, they possess cars and because of this, accidents happen.
However, before buying a car, think long enough whether you need it or not. Evaluate the reasons why you need a car. Is it for convenience or popularity? Afterwards, decide about it and consider the advantages and disadvantages of your decision.
