In the past, events such as the Protestant Reformation was so influential that the Catholic church adopted many of the new ideas from Protestantism. A Protestant denomination such as Anglicanism allows female ministers while the Catholic church still does not allow women to become priests. While Protestantism and rest of the world have advanced greatly in the area of gender equality, the Catholic church still falls behind with the exclusion of women in the priesthood. The same can be said for the issue of gay rights. As the rest of the world makes large strides in the area of gay rights such as the legalization of gay marriage within the US, the Catholic church falls behind with unsatisfactory responses on the issue. The current and controversial issues of gay rights, abortion, euthanasia, and gender equality within the Catholic church are hotly debated, leading to an air of indecisiveness. Although Francis may be vastly more innovative than his predecessors, these issues are still addressed unsatisfactorily. The church’s slow and inadequate actions on these issues do no favours for anyone including the church itself. The church’s unwillingness for change as it holds on to past traditions can be addressed, but Francis’ actions are not significant enough to fully address the issues at
