In the early 1800's, America started to get interested in Hawaii, as the weather and land were ideal for agriculture. So, Americans entered Hawaii and supported its growth as they took numerous types of activities such as introducing coffee, pineapple as new crops and making the sugar industry larger. The support from America made the agriculture of Hawaii grow fast as by the mid 1800's it was the biggest part of its economy. In the late part of the 1800's, although the agriculture was succeeding there were two problems. Firstly, due to illnesses and the rapid growth, there weren't enough workers. Secondly, local workers salary was too high. To solve this problem, farms started to get lots of cheaper workers from other countries. Starting from…

Back when Hawaii was in pre-contact and lived a sustainable life, ancient Hawaiians lived in land divisions (from mountain to sea) called ahupua’a. This rule applied to everyone so each family can get their fair share on their resources including freshwater, fruits and vegetables, pigs, and fishpond. Although Hawaii is not as sustainable as how it used to be, it is still possible to originate to our roots of living and create a more beneficial and healthy environment for today and future generations. Thus, the parallels amongst traditional Hawaiian practices of environmental management and modern, sustainable technologies of climate change form the foundation of many of the material used in the state of Hawaii.…

Most people have realized that food waste is a major issue in today’s society, yet we tend to neglect any action towards it. Though there has been an increasing amount of action against food waste, more people need to be convinced that this is a matter that needs immediate attention. Bloom was successful getting the point across in regards to food waste affecting our society in a negative manner. Three phrases he used in the text to get that point across to readers were cultural shift, culture of waste, and culture of thrift.…

This is the island that gave the state its name. This island is the largest of them all in fact “Hawaii is twice as big as the other islands added together” (Neri p. 64). This island is home to several volcanoes, including the most active one in the entire world, Kilauea. Watching this volcano erupt is absolutely breathtaking, but it is extremely dangerous. It has completely engulfed over two hundred homes and covered several beaches. The only good effect the volcanic eruptions have to this island is the fact that it is growing. “Its lava flows have added almost 600 acres of new land to the island’s coast since 1983” (Neri p. 65). This island in my opinion would be the best island to visit due to the fact it is the most breath taking island because of its scenery. I have never been to Hawaii but from the pictures I have seen I’m sure it is absolutely…

“The Aloha State” was annexed to the United States in 1959, but its history can be dated back centuries earlier. Approximately 1,500 years ago, Polynesians from the Marquesas Islands first set foot in Hawaii. Hawaiian culture, a mixture of many Polynesian traditions, flourished over the centuries. The arrival of Captain James Cook, Protestant missionaries, and European diseases in the late 18th and early 19th centuries stunted the growth and development of the native Hawaiian population. Western influence continued to grow and by 1893, American colonists, who controlled much of Hawaii's economy, overthrew the Hawaiian Kingdom. Although many natives died in the hustle of their history, their culture lived on. When on vacationing in Hawaii, tourists can experience the vibrancy of the Hawaiian culture firsthand.…

The waste of mankind can literally be found throughout all parts of our planet. Contrary to what people would like to believe, not all garbage magically makes its way into some convenient dump. In fact, it is estimated that mankind dumps about 14 billion pounds of plastic into our oceans each year ("Marine Debris"). Everywhere leads to the ocean; whether pollutants travel by river, sewer, or runoff makes no difference. In recent years, the amount of debris making its way into the marine environment has been the cause of great concern. Fragments and remains of discarded plastics have been observed to be forming a landfill of sorts stretching for hundreds of miles across the North Pacific. This "Great" Pacific Ocean garbage patch has been found to be having grave effects on our environment and the wildlife that resides within it. Plastics and toxic chemicals are ending up in the stomachs of marine animals. Besides killing sea life in substantial numbers, the garbage patch is also creating detrimental toxic effects on our environment through the absorption of chemical compounds in the seawater.…
