Population and Age
For most in the neighborhood, unity, labor, and the industrial economy dominate employment. This is reflected in the educational attainment of residents who do not normally include a college degree. The eastern census tracts (tracts 180.01, 180.02, 378, 379) have a much higher median age, at or above 40 years, while census tract 179 on the western edge of the neighborhood has the youngest median age at 27.9 years.This difference in age follows the division line of Aramingo Avenue which shows that there are two distinctly different populations within the neighborhood.
By looking to the age distribution of all the residents in Port Richmond, we see specific age group concentrations. Port Richmond has a lower, higher educational attainment than the Philadelphia average. Around 20% of Port Richmond residents have not completed high school and only 19% of residents have obtained a bachelor’s degree or higher. This is low compared to the Philadelphia average of around 26% of residents who hold a bachelor’s degree or higher.
Household Income
Despite the low rates of higher educational attainment, the median household income in Port Richmond is around $42,000 which is slightly higher than Philadelphia’s median household income of $39,770. While Port Richmond overall exceeds this city median, there are a few sections of the neighborhood where the median household income is much lower; census tracts 179 and 382.
